After several years of training and arming themselves with new weapons purchased from surplus arsenals across America, they finally faced up to what would become their final challenge: invading Nazi Germany alone and unsupported! TheirOperation went poorly-in fact, many members of the regiment died during battle or shortly thereafter due to wounds received while fighting alongside American forces. However, despite all these setbacks-and even some losses-the Volunteers continue fighting until today as part of Washington's military contingent stationed abroad. As such, Commander Royce Ewing said about them back in 1945: "They are still here because our country needs them." And we can see evidence to support this assertion today; both militarily speaking (the volunteers have fought in every major conflict since then) and domestically (the Ellensburg National Guard continuesto serve without interruption since September 11th).

The first European to visit what is now Ellensburg was Vancouver Island's French voyageur Jean-Baptiste Pointe de la Gardie on December 12th, 1700 while exploring the Strait of Juan de Fuca between Canada and Washington state; he named it "Ella" after his wife Eleanor (née Thoreau). Pointe de la Gardie explored most of what is now Thurston County before his return trip to France on July 17th, 1701C1 He also mapped out much of present-day Seattle including Elliott Bay and Lake Union which he named "Portage du Diable" because of its difficult navigation conditions when combined with nearby Mount Rainier National Park; this naming probably resulted from interactions with local fur traders who had trade routes through that area. In 1851, George Stephenson built a railroad line from Tacoma to Wenatchee via Ellensburg and connection with Olympia that helped start development around here during the late 1800s overlooking today's downtown skyline NE side looking out over Elliott BayNW side
