The Ellensburg Regiment was organized on December 20, 1861, in Ellensburg, Washington. The regiment served during the American Civil War as a volunteer infantry battalion. On April 12, 1865, the regiment disbanded as a result of its disbandment order issued by President Abraham Lincoln.

In 1847, Congress passed an act providing for annexation by Washington of all or part of Alaska; work began on annexing Prince Rupert's Island which includedpresent-dayEllensburg. The land acquisition process proceeded slowly due to disagreements about how much land should be taken - mostly about whether it should be annexed as part of Canada or Russia . Ellensburg is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 568 at the 2010 census. It has been under the jurisdiction of the Thurston County School District since 1908. The first residents of what would become Ellensburg were Native Americans who lived near contemporary Wenatchee and Edmonds. George Vancouver explored the region during his 1792 visit to North America and named it after his friend and mentor, King George III of Great Britain. In 1836, a group of soldiers from Fort Snelling erected an adobe wall around present-day downtown Ellensburg to protect settlers from Native American attacks. The first store in town was established on Main Street in 1846 by John Hanks and his brother-in-law James Tipton. Early settlers also built homes up until 1872 when a post office was established at the current location. The townsite that now includes downtown was platted in 1867 by George Wickersham as part of his 3rd precinct land grant system which led to creation of Thurston County. The initial plat included parcels totaling 0.5 square miles (1 km²). A school district was created in 1907 with five schools: one for white children and four for Indian children; both races were taught together until 1951 when Indian students were moved into their own school district . In 1928, work began on building what would become the Wickersham Annexe which served as the county jail from 1928 until its closure in 1978 In 1930, voters approved construction of a new courthouse which became operational on May 1st, 1931 In 1933, Ellensburg became part of Grays Harbor County through countyhood conventions staged by then Governor Earl Warren In 1937 Elliot Highway opened connecting Interstate 90 to Seattle via Everett . On December 3, 1859, the first permanent white settlement in what is now Ellensburg was established when John C. Fremont and his party traveled through the area on their way to explore the Columbia River. The town was named Fort Washburn after General George Washington's military headquarters at nearby Mount Vernon. The tiny community grew quickly, with a population of around 30 people in 1860. In 1861,Ellensburg became part of the newly created Washington Territory and began experiencing rapid growth as a result of new railroad construction and other economic opportunities. By 1870, the town had a population of 500 residents. In 1872, local businessman Brigham Young purchased land adjacent to Ellensburg for an enlarged city that would eventually become Salt Lake City. Utah became an independent state in 1896 and Ellensburg lost its status as a municipal township; however, it continued to experience significant growth throughout ensuing years as various businesses moved into the town from outlying areas. The early 20th century saw dramatic changes within Ellensburg as successive waves of immigrants arrived from all over North America – including many Swiss-Americans – seeking opportunity and new challenges. By 1920,Ellensburg had reached its current size with a population of 1,500 residents (including 400 farmers) and was one of the largest towns in western Washington. During this time period,Ellensburg also experienced some significant infrastructure development including the construction of roads and bridges which facilitated increased commerce and transportation across westernWashingtonand helped create new suburban communities around it such as Marysville and Bellevue
