The first artisan coffee was brewed in Ellensburg, Washington in 1907. It was a small business operation run by John Cavanaugh and his wife Jennie. They roasted whole beans and grinds for themselves, selling their coffee direct to customers. The popularity ofartisan coffee began to grow in the early 1960s when Harry's Coffee opened up in town and started importing ground espresso from Italy. This popularized the style of artisan coffee throughout the United States. The first coffee was roasted in Ellensburg, Washington in 1876. The first café in town was the Cafe de la Main, which opened its doors on December 5th, 1876. The first cup of coffee was brewed by Mrs. J.F. Stephenson and served to customers at the hotel on Union Street.
Ellensburg is a town in Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by settler John A. Paddock and named for General George Armistead Ellsworth (1824-1895), who fought in the Mexican–American War and received the Medal of Honor for his actions near Alamo Heights. The first school was built in 1883 and the first post office opened in 1885. In 1907, the Kittitas Electric Railway began service to Ellensburg from its station on Main Street. In 1911, the first High School was built on Summit Avenue and it served as both a primary and secondary school until 1976 when it became an Elementary School again under new name – Kittitas Valley High School. In 1916, Pioneer Park was completed and became home to baseball diamonds, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a playground, a multipurpose hall/lodge called "The Pavilion" with artesian wells that supplied water for taps throughout town during summer months (the wells still operate today), library services including rare books collection dating back to 1886 (!), community center with classrooms/ canteen/multi-purpose room/conference suite(s), movie theater with projection booth & WIFI capabilities (~2002) . After many years of growth (due largely to private donations) as well as advances made through public education funding sources such as King County's K-12 budget which has increased every decade since 2001;Ellensburg’s core demographics have shifted from older adult maleiona residents primarily employed within local government entities (police officers & firefighters) - currently 65% of population;to younger adults more likely working or living outside of municipality but still extensively involved within their community thru participation in various volunteerism activities (& numerous others);&an increasing percentage of females over 50 years old having retired or moved away from municipality altogether due to lack of available work opportunities within our ever expanding downtown area
