The history of the Coast Guard in Ellensburg, Washington dates back to 1879. At that time, the town was located on the Columbia River and had a need for a bodyguard to protect vessels and people coming and going from the port. The first Coast Guard Station in Ellensburg was built on First Street NE. It served as a temporary station until a permanent one could be constructed. In 1915, the Coast Guard moved its headquarters from Seattle to Olympia. In 1951, responsibility for patrolling upriver from Tacoma was transferred to the Coast Guard Station in Ellensburg. That same year, the Bellingham Harbor District was created and Headquarters were moved to Bellingham in 1962. In 1985, responsibility for Patrol along both coasts of Washington were transferred to NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). This gave rise to new concerns about shipping traffic crossing Puget Sound; however, it also allowed NMFS more space within which to pursue their maritime enforcement mission. Since then, there have been few changes related to Coast Guard operations in Ellensburg- including periodic reviews of helicopter capabilities and an increase in marine patrol boats available at local portsides. Ellensburg is a small town in Washington state, United States. The population was 5,614 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Snohomish County metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1872 by George Brougham and his brother-in-law John Lawrence. The first post office was established in 1874. The name "Ellensburg" came from the Indian word "alen" meaning "a hillock." In 1902, the town had a population of 1,500 and began to grow rapidly due to its role as an agricultural center for the surrounding region. By 1910, Ellensburg had reached 4,000 residents. In 1927, when Everett Widenhoeffer became pastor of Sts., Methodist Episcopal Church in nearby Moses Lake, he decided to move his congregation from Seattle to Ellensburg because of its growing religious sector. Widenhoeffer's move helped spur commercial development in the town; businesses such as J&B Cigar Store & Grill (now known as Bob's Pizza), Kwik Trip Inc., and Safeway arrived between 1928 and 1938. Ballooning competitions were popular during this time; one event that took place at the local high school involved launching helium balloons intothe sky and release them at various locations around town (one balloon even made it all the way to Olympia). By 1971, there were over 10 thousand people living in Ellensburg; however, industry still provided most of the jobs throughout much of this period. The town was founded in 1847 as a small community on the banks of the Columbia River, near what is now Seattle. It grew rapidly during the 19th century, thanks to its strategic location at the junction of several wagon routes and its natural resources. In 1907, Ellensburg became an incorporated city. Today, it remains a rural community with narrow streets and unpaved roads. The population of Ellensburg was 3,843 at the 2010 census; it has since grown to more than 11,000 residents. The history of Ellensburg begins with early pioneers who arrived in 1847. One group led by Captain George Hill explored the area in search of new land for settlers. They found that much territory had been claimed by other Native nations before they were able to claim their own land east of Puget Sound. With no clear boundary set between Indian Territory and what is now Washington state, Captains Hill and his men decided to establish a settlement here on what would become known as “Hill” Point (later renamed “Ellensburgh”). This settlement failed due to lack of food supplies and water availability but provided enough hope for future growth when Captain John Wesley Powell discovered gold near present-day Auburn Hills in 1858. After exploring this new gold discovery further he decided that this could be turned into a viable agricultural operation so he bought up some nearby acreage for $5 per acre ($40 million today). This investment proved successful when he builtthe first commercial depot on Walla Walla River in 1860; soon afterwards he began selling goods from this depot across Puget Sound to farmers throughout eastern Washington State. In addition to its role as an important transportation hub during prohibition times,Ellensburg also became known for its manufactures including lumber, saddles and clotheslines until these activities peaked around World War II when aluminum production took over dominance (although wood products continue to be produced).Today many aspectsof local life remain unchanged such as agriculture – haymaking is one common activity – while others have changed such as becoming an bedroom community for students attending UW–Seattle or experiencing increased traffic congestion caused by development along Interstate 5 outside the town limits
In 1849, the Ellensburg and Skagit Railroad was completed from Ellensburg to Mount Vernon. The railroad helped promote settlement in the area and led to the construction of lumber mills and other businesses. In 1907, the Ellensburg Municipal Airport was established and has served as a regional airfield for over 50 years.
