The town of Ellensburg, located in the Yakima Valley in western Washington, was founded by George Custer on July 10, 1885. The town was named after General Philip Sheridan, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Indiana. The town grew rapidly due to its location and its demand for goods brought over the railroad. In 1914, the Ellensburg Public Library opened and soon became one of the largest public libraries in Washington state. In 1956, the United States Post Office moved from downtown to Ellensburg and is still used today. The town experienced a large growth in population during World War II as many people came to work at Boeing plants in Seattle and Tacoma. After the war ended, many people left Ellensburg for other areas of Washington state because of new economic opportunities available in Puget Sound region. During recent years, much development has been done within the boundaries of Ellensburg including several high-rise apartment buildings and a new shopping mall called "CenturyLink".
After the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the area around Ellensburg became a center of fur trade. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1592. A later explorer, Capt. John Cushing, explored the basin in 1797 and named it after General George Washington. In 1819, Gov. Edmunds organized a railroad from Seattle to Ellensburg with help from investors, and construction began immediately. The town rapidly grew during this time period with many new businesses opening up including a mill, storeroom, post office, schoolhouse and jail. In 1870, when Washburn Grant took office as governor of Washington Territory, he decided thatEllensburg would be the capital of his department which included most of what is now WA (except for portions of Snohomish County). He selected Ellensburg as the temporary capital because he felt that Olympia would not be ready until after more permanent structures were built there. The Panic of 1893 caused much economic hardship in WA and especially in Ellensburg where mills closed down and people lost their jobs; however, Elsinborg continued to grow even during these difficult times. In 1907-1908 a major project was undertaken to improve transportation between Everett on Lake Washington and points east by building a bridge over Skagit River using stone brought overland from Vancouver Island by wagon trainloads; this project is often considered one of the greatest feats of engineering ever accomplished in North America at that time. During World War II an airfield was constructed at nearby Morell Field which served as training ground for Boeing airplane pilots beginning in 1940 until 1945. After the war saw rapid growth throughout WA due to rising prices for natural resources such as oil and gas; however much manufacturing has also shifted away from WA into other parts of North America since then including China and Mexico City . The population peaked at around 60,000 in 1960 but has since decreased significantly due mainly to suburbanization across WA state while non-residential development continues rapidly expanding within town limits; although some high-end properties have been developed recently within town boundaries (e.g., University Hills), overall population density remains low relative to larger metro areas across North America
