Ellensburg, Washington is a town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,693 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Thurston County. The city of Ellensburg was incorporated on February 14, 1907. The first permanent settler in the area now known as Ellensburg was David Hunter who landed his ship "The Discovery" on October 12, 1792 near what is now downtown Ellensburg. He named his new settlement after his home state of Virginia and soon started to build log homes and other rudimentary structures. In 1807, David's son John built the first courthouse in what is now downtownEllensburg; it served as the county seat until 1889 when that office went to Moses Lake. In 1881, George Stephenson built the first electric streetcar line from Olympia to Everett and began service inEllenburgh on March 9th that year. This line became one of the country's earliest public transit systems with stops at all major cities along its route including Seattle and Tacoma. A post office called "Everett" was established in 1886; it was renamed "Ellensburg" in 1907 due to increased mail traffic from nearby Seattle and Tacoma. There were also several small mills located around town beginning production in earnest during this time such as Richards & Company (1897), Wm Haskins & Sons (1905), Jno Cramer (1910) and others which continued until well into World War II when they were converted into munitions plants or closed down entirely because of wartime competition from abroad. Growth occurred gradually throughout much of the 20th century but exploded during World War II with an estimated population increase by 50%. At war's end there were over 100 businesses operating in town employing over 1,500 people accounting for almost two-thirds of all local economic activity within ten years following hostilities ceased! After the war ended, the city began to grow rapidly due to new businesses opening up and population growth. Today, Ellensburg is one of Washington's fastest-growing cities with a population of over 10,000 citizens. The history of Ellensburg begins with George Washington Carleton who settled in this area in 1881. Carleton worked as a surveyor before coming to work on what would become known as Carleton land grant settlements which were given out by President George Washington during his time as Secretary of War (1801-1802). The lands that would be granted included parts of today's Yakima Valley region including present-day Ellensburg Township and portions of nearby Wenatchee County.. Carleton developed what would eventually become known as Carleton land grant villages which were situated around watercourses providing easy access to transport goods from other areas in Northwest America.. In 1916, whenEllenburgh became an incorporated municipality within Wenatchee County., it became apparent that there was potential for large commuter populations within their boundaries because they had easy access to transportation facilities such as railroads and steamboats.. As more businesses opened up within downtown or along major arterial streets,, commuters soon started driving into town insteadof parking their cars at various intersections outside downtown because mainline buses stopped at those locations only during rush hours! This led eventuallyto incorporation which happened on December 17th 1916 under City Manager Harry Fenton.. Today,Ellenbourg is one of Washington's fastest-growing cities with a population over 10k citizens! Much credit should go towards Mayor Rick Simpson who has been responsible for bringing much needed economic developmenttothetown since he took office in 2013; creating jobs & keeping taxes low while still ensuring that quality services are availablewithinthecommunity!
