Ellensburg is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and the largest city in King County by population. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ellensburg were fur traders traveling along the Columbia River. In 1847, they erected a log cabin on the site of present-day downtown Ellensburg and named it "Fort Vancouver". The first Post Office was established in 1849, but did not open until 1861. In 1865, Fort Vancouver became an important military post during the American Civil War due to its strategic location on both sides of the river between Seattle and Tacoma. The fort served as a headquarters for General George Custer's cavalry unit during his famous fight with Union forces at Little Big Horn (1869). During World War II, Fort Vancouver played a significant role in helping bring war supplies upriver to naval units at Seattle Harbor. After 1945, it slowly fell into disrepair and was used for storage until 1978 when it was leased to local developers for use as an industrial park. In 1984, it reverted back to its original name; Fort Vancouver State Park. The city of Ellensburg owes much of its present identity to two factors: First, the large number of businesses that moved into town after Microsoft began operations there in 1983; second,the creation of Sound Transit 3 which helped catalyze growth in downtown Ellensburg throughout the 1990s and 2000s. During World War II, Germans diverted much of Europe's supply of raw materials such as cocoa beans into munitions production so they could not be used for brewing caffeine-based drinks like tea or espresso. Consequently, most Italian espresso machines came with filters made out of burlap or paper rather than metal or plastic because these materials couldn't withstand high temperatures during wartime production.
