The town of Ellensburg, Washington was founded in 1847 by James W. Whitman. The town is located on the banks of the Columbia River and became a center for education and industry. In 1909, the city of Ellensburg merged with neighboring Spokane to form a larger community known as Spokane-Ellensburg. Today, Ellensburg is a small, rural town with a population of around 2,000 residents. The history of Ellensburg began with the settlement of farmers near present-day downtown in 1847. The first permanent settler in what is now Ellensburg was James W. Whitman who arrived in 1847 from Ohio with his family. At that time, most people in what is now central and eastern Washington lived on the western side of the river where timber was available for sale orchards and farms were located next to navigable creeks and rivers. In addition to hunting and fishing opportunities available near present day Spokane City limits, settlers found good land for farming near Big Hole Creek which emptied into the Columbia River at present day Cheney Reservoir. In 1848 several men organized an effort to purchase land east of modern day Spokane City limits from Native Americans who had been living there for generations. The group led by George Stevenson purchased over 4 miles (6 kilometers) east of modern day Spokane City limits including all but 1/4 mile (1 kilometer) of its current width at Big Hole Creek which flows into the Columbia River just south of Cheney Reservoir). What are today called Stevenson Ranch Road (US Route 210), Stevens Ferry Road (SR 10), Highland Drive (SR 605), Nowhere Road (SR 522) were then part of this original purchase; they are now close to downtown Spokesville.. While much work still needed to be done before towns could be established at these new sites it did not take long until some early buildings were erected within present day downtown: The Methodist Church was built in 1850 while School District No 3 building was erected in 1851; both structures remain standing today as part as part of cityscape seen from many areas within downtown Spokesville . Agrarian society characterized early days life around here supplemented subsistence catches during season when stocks ran low either due to bad weather or illness among hunters & gatherers…. game animals brought home fresh – no proding allowed
