Ellensburg is a small town in Yakima County, Washington on the eastern edge of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-East Wenatchee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Ellensburg" comes from a Chief's words meaning "the place where the white people can live." The first permanent settlers in what is now Ellensburg were two families from New York, who arrived in 1853 and founded an agricultural colony called Fort George. In 1861, they moved their settlement to what is now downtown and named it after General Ulysses S. Grant's birthplace in Kentucky, Mount Rushmore National Monument. The town grew rapidly during World War II as military personnel and civilians relocated here for work at Boeing Aircraft facilities near Seattle and Spokane. After the war ended, many residents returned to their homes while others built new residences or businesses along State Street between Central Avenue and Union Boulevard. Today, much of downtown remains abandoned but some parts have been renovated into modern business districts including nearby Everett and Bellevue areas. In 1957, the state legislature designated Ellensburg one of five townships within Yakima County that would be established if voters approved a proposal to create an area around Wenatchee known as East Wenatchee metropolitan statistical area (MSA). That same year, construction began on east side of central square then completed by 1970 when MSA boundaries were changed to encompass all of Yakima County south of Interstate 5 . Since then much development has taken place with businesses moving into older neighborhoods which remain mostly abandoned today because there are no assurances that future development will meet community needs or support current occupants

The town of Ellensburg, Washington, is located in the Columbia River Gorge on the east side of the state. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. The name Ellensburg comes from a mission founded by French missionaries in 1792. In 1854, it became an incorporated city and has since grown to be one of the largest cities in Washington. The first permanent residents of what is now Ellensburg were Native Americans who had been living there for thousands of years before that. They called their land "the Snohomish country." In 1792, a group of French missionaries arrived here and began trading with the natives. They named their new settlement after Pierre-Étienne de La Salle, Sieur de l'Aubigné (1725-1793), who had been sent to North America as part of a French circumnavigation expedition led by Marquis de Lafayette in 1785. When La Salle arrived in Northwest America, he found that most of what he thought were frontiers were actually chainspinned strips of wilderness bisected by rivers and streams which he believed could be explored and colonized. He Accordingly founded many missions along this stretch of newly discovered land which we now call Oregon Country; his Mission at Chehalis near present day Bend was among these early settlements. In 1854, when Washington Territory was created from parts of Oregon Country northward into what is today Idaho andaine it included all or part of modern Ellensburg including its eastern border until then stretching only 2 miles west to meet the Snake River just south ofold Fort Walla Walla on Federal land then extending northerly 3 miles beyond present day Pullman to include present day Spokane County lying within Indian Reservation boundaries also parcelage granted by USIA under various treaty titles including Treaty 7 dated November 16th 1855 between USIA & Great Britain consisting largely around Yakima Valley where Yankton Bayou empties into Puget Sound & NE portions lying within limits surveyed by Lewis & Clarke either prior to or during surveyor's visit July 25th 1856 Aftermaths: The Gold Rush brought increased traffic and development to this area which caused soil erosion leading to water shortages and infrastructure problems that continue up through present day In 1861 Congress passed an act appropriating $10,000 for “legislative duties” associated with creationof Washington Territory but no money ever reached Ellensburgites for lack thereof On October 15th 1861 Gov James Kapp ordered Ulysses S Grant march through Eastern Washington demanding compliance with orders issued earlier that year regarding military operations against Confederates prisoners at Pendleton Barracks On November 8th 1861 following successful breakout attempt by Union forces General George Armstrong Custer discovered Massacre Site nearpresent day Cheney while searching for Confederate prisoner Robert E Lee our commander ordered all Union troops back home without finding any bodies However some reports claim over 50 civilians may have died here as well as 10+ horses This event remains controversial even 30 years later& continues to cause tension between local communities & government officials over control/ responsibilty for site Aftermaths: Ulysses S Grant ordered all Union troops back home without finding any bodies However some reports claim over 50 civilians may have died here as well as 10+ horses As a result #Elliarsburgh still struggles with unresolved questions about why these units left& whether they knew what they were doing
