He started the first roastery in that city and began selling coffee. In 1821, a French trader named Pierre L’Heureux bought the business from Cornelius and renamed it La Caza Coffee Company. L’Heureux continued to sell coffee until his death in 1848. The company was sold to an American businessman, John D. Rockefeller, in 1888. Rockefellers continued to operate the company until its sale to Starbucks in 1996.
Ellensburg is a town in Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Kittitas County. The name of the town may be derived from an early settler named Eli ( Elk) and his wife Anna ( Apple).
The town of Ellensburg was founded in 1847 by the brothers John and David Ellensburg. The town grew rapidly due to its location on thesteamboat route between Seattle and Tacoma. By 1860, the population had reached 2,000 people. In 1878, the Ellensburg Gold Rush began and led to a rapid growth in the town. By 1890, the population had reached 4,000 people. In 1907, the state of Washington acquired land within the Town limits for development into an agricultural area known as "The Farm". In 1910, Congress passed a bill annexing portions of Yakima County to WA; this created Yakima County and increasedEllensburg's size by 20%. On November 3rd 1912 voters approved incorporation of Ellensburg as a city. On January 1st 1914 Mayor James Fenton became first mayor of Ellensburg with power to create municipal ordinances and make decisions with respect to public health and welfare. On March 12th 1916 Governor George Brandt issued Executive Order No. 5 which authorized Federal assistance in forming a new county in Yakima County named after President Woodrow Wilson – Territorial County of Yakima – with territory that included present-day Ellensburg residents John A Fletcher and his father Reuben Fletcher who had moved there from agriculturally based Baker Valley about 1880; these moves were made in order to stimulate economic development within Territorial County while providing racial balance within what would become King County (now Puget Sound). The addition of annexed areas from neighboring counties resulted in an overall population increase for both Yakima Counties from over 100,000 in 1916 down to just over 50,000 by 1924 when they were again divided into twocounties –King (west) & Territorial (east)]. It should be noted that those annexation efforts did not result until well after World War II when Yahkimacoounty was finally established as part of King county following victory at all levels duringthe war effort against Japanese occupation; thus bringing some muchneeded stability back to rural northwestern King county which had been hit hard by wartime destruction and abandonment
