Ellensburg is a small town in Washington State, United States. It is located on the eastern edge of the Yakima Valley and falls within the Confederated Tribes of The Wapiti Nation. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ellensburg-Richmond City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Ellensburg" likely originated from an early settler called Eli Whitney who named his farm after George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. In 1868, Andrew J. Holmquist, an entrepreneur and landowner in nearby Spokane County, donated to the State of Washington a tract of land that included present-day Ellensburg and portions of Richmond City. He named it Holmquist National Forest after himself and his wife Anna Holmquist (1822-1910). In 1901, a group of businessmen from Seattle organized what became known as the Ellensburg Mining District to exploit coal seams near present-day Ellensburg. The first mine opened in 1903; it closed in 1924 due to low coal prices and competition from other mines throughout Washington state. In 1907–08, local entrepreneurs built what is now known as Pioneer Park on 55 acres east of town across Wilson Creek from where pioneer James Rice set up shop for wagon building in 1847; he later became one of America's most successful farmers with over 100 family farms around central Oregon. In 1911 Pioneer Park was renamed Pioneer Gardens after John Wesley Powell's visit there three years earlier on his ill-fated journey through Alaska during the Klondike gold rush era; he also gave some money towards its construction which helped make Pioneer Park one of downtown Ellensberg's earliest landmarks and attractions for residents and visitors alike today! Ellensburg is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,181 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ellensburg-Olympia-Heavens Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Ellensburg were traveling Indians who had come down from the Northwest Territories. They named their new town after Alexander Hamilton, the British Prime Minister who helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent which ended the American Revolution. The town grew gradually and by 1870 it had a population of 350 people. In 1907, a dam was built across Clearwater River to provide irrigation water for farming in nearby Stevenson and Elma Counties. This provided new jobs for locals and helped make Ellensburg an incorporated village with a post office and school on December 5th, 1907 On January 1st, 1912, Spokane School District No 9 merged with King County School District No 6 to form one large district. That same year saw the opening of what would later be called "The Bowman Building" as the first public library in Washington state In 1963 voters approved an $8 million bond issue that funded many projects including heavy transportation work on Interstate 90 and widening of State Route 99W Ellensburg's main shopping strip at 3rd Street S & University Way became known as "The Avenue". In 1969 Ellensburg became home to both NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) located on land leased from local landowners and also Western Washington University which opened its doors on campus just south of downtown By 1999 only about 10% of residents still worked within close proximity to their homes; most residents commute into Olympia or Seattle . However some families have continued to farmsteadraise animals near their homes while others have purchased acreage adjacent to I-90 for development . Today over 60% of residents are either college graduates or employed professionals .
