From there they served until their promotion to Captain on December 1st 1868 after leading their unit during engagements at Monocacy Battlefield and Cedar Mountain Campaigns. After experiencing combat duty twice more during Reconstruction-the last time being during World War II-the women returned home and completed their basic training at Fort Leavenworth before becoming nurses with Seattle’s Memorial Hospital from 1902-1906 and then First Lady Alice Paul’s National Health Service American Nurses Association from 1906-1915. In 1915 they received their final promotion to Major after leading a nurses brigade through Europe during World War I while also working as directors general staff hospitals at various points along the front line including Arras ( France), Salonika ( Bulgaria), Vimy Ridge ( Belgium), and Passchendaele ( Netherlands). Upon their return home they retired from active service but continued providing nursing services until her death in 1951.]
