The Navy deployed gift history in Ellensburg, Washington during World War II. The military service bestowed many unusual and memorable gifts upon local residents. Some of these items are still in use today and can be seen at the Ellensburg Naval Supply Depot. Navy gifted USS Constitution Museum artifacts to the museum in 1944. These unique pieces were donated by Rear Admiral C.W. Kingsey, who served as Commandant of the Naval Academy from 1937-1943. The collection represented naval history from Colonial times until the present day and included cannons, ships, uniforms, medals and other memorabilia from various navy vessels around the world. In 1951, Commodore Harry Wohlleben donated a large blackboard inscribed with USS Constitution Museum's original Operations Order No. 1 to the museum for their library studies room renovation project. This board was used as a timeline for historical exhibits located within the museum itself as well as for classroom teaching purposes since it bore evidence documenting each ship's movements during wartime operations both on land and sea (Operation Neptune). The Olympia arrived at Naval Base Kitsap on 10 October and got underway for Seattle on 12 October. The ship conducted surveying and mapping operations in the Puget Sound area before leaving for her new homeport of Everett,Washington on 18 October 1944. The Olympia arrived at Everett on 25October 1944 and operated out of that port until 15 January 1945 when she sailed back to Seattle to decommission.
Ellensburg is a small town in central Washington, just outside the city of Seattle. It is located on the Ellensburg River and has a population of approximately 1,500 people. The town was named after General George A. Armstrong and his wife, Ellen Cushman Armstrong. The adjacent river valley had been inhabited by the Puyallup Tribe for centuries before European settlement began in the 1700s. The first buildings in the town were built between 1851 and 1854, when it was part of what was known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition's landing site on the Ellensburg River. The expedition's leader, Chief Joseph impelled by curiosity, explored and mapped much of Northwestern America during his stay in what is now Washington state in early 1804-05. After Lewis and Clark's death at the Battle of layton Creek on July 5,1806, their party continued westward along present day Interstate 5 until they reached modern day Spokane late that summer; Armstrong followed later that year but did not reach Walla Walla until October 27th after enduring an arduous journey over difficult terrain following a route through Yakima country which he had mapped out himself some time earlier – this route having bypassed most of Yakima Valley then lying within what is today southcentral Puget Sound (the area now known as Bellevue). From there he led an army overland to attack Looks Like Lake near present day Ellensburg whereupon his force discovered gold veins being worked by local Indians – this discovery soon changed many aspects of American Indian policy with General Armstrong becoming one of the leading voices for Manifest Destiny attacks upon First Nations tribes throughout much of North America. In 1865–66 General Armstrong served as military governor/chief executive officer (CQE)of Multnomah County before dying at home from natural causes two years later while undergoing treatment for brain cancer at age 80 years old; leaving behind a widow Ellen Cushman Armstrong who functioned as mayor from 1865-1921 & 1923-1945 In 1971 Mayor Harry Heineman announced plans to build a new high school in downtownEllensburg which would serve all students from kindergarten through twelfth grade; however due to opposition from nearby businesses owner Herb Weitzel formed an oppositional group dubbed “Keep Our High School” which eventually succeeded in getting city officials to abandon their plans outright Mayor Heineman also announced plans for renovating existing businesses Downtown into apartments or condos thereby creating jobs while keeping prices low while maintaining character & atmosphere desired by many residents including several professional wrestlers who made appearances at local venues during early 2000s Ellensburg wrestling renaissance era
