Enumclaw is a small town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,929 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The name "enumclaw" comes from thekwaht'en word meaning "big hill." The first European to visit Enumclaw was Juan de Fuca in 1692. Indians called it Kwahkiwetl and the first white man to mention it Mayflower Compact called it New Holland (now Everett). English traders named the place after their own ship, HMS Discovery, which anchored there in 1795. In 1851, gold was found at what is now Enumclaw and development began. In 1907, an electric light company established a station here and by 1912 there were two stores and six restaurants. By 1916 enumsclaw had 10 residents and three churches; oneMethodist Episcopal and two Roman Catholic. When World War II broke out on December 7th 1941 local resident Major John Pyle joined up with other Puget Sound locals to help form Midway Air Force Base adjacent to Naval Station Mukilteo where he would serve as Public Information Officer until his death on December 2nd 1945 during aerial combat over Iwo Jima when his plane went down behind enemy lines bombing Japanese forces who thought he was a USAAF pilot! After World War II many families left for better opportunities elsewhere but some brought back memories of their time living here including Gertrude Jablonski who wrote her memoirs about life in Enumclaw during the 1930s before she moved to Hollywood . On November 15th 2007- just shy of eighty years after its incorporation into Pierce County- Enumclaw voted unanimously to change its name from New Holland to Seattle! This unanimous vote came about due mainly because people wanted more recognition for their community following passage of Initiative 439 earlier that year which authorized county commissioners to make such changes without voter approval! Enumclaw is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 797 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The town's name is derived from the Inca word "enuma" meaning "place where things are found." The first settler in Enumclaw was George Vancouver, who arrived in 1853 and named it after his own home country, England. In 1854, John Wesley Powell founded the Central Pacific Railroad through Enumclaw and other villages on his route to build a railroad through central Washington. In later years, many businesses and residences were built around Puget Sound Naval Base which made Enumclaw an important community for military residents and sailors. After its closure in 1997, much of the naval base's land was annexed by the town to form a new park known as Naval Air Station Endicott Park. The post office at Enumclaw started operation on November 1, 1855; it changed its name to Enumclaw on October 8 of that year due to concerns about how the original spelling would be pronounced by local settlers living near Tacoma. The current spelling derives from when English settlers began pronouncing "en-UM-kuh" as "ea-nuhm". On July 24, 1907, Enumclaw became a city with a population of over 100 people when King County voted 3/2 in favor of annexing it as part of Tacoma. Enumclaw has experienced various waves of growth throughout its history; during World War II most notably it saw an influx of soldiers returning home after serving abroad while also becoming known for its poultry industry which produced eggs for Boeing Airlines until 1990s; since then however much agricultural production has centered around growing crops such as grapes and apples . currently there are few nonresidential buildings within enumsawe including Casino Olympia SEAHAWK which opened in early 2009 adjacent to existing restaurant Seaquarium
