The Enumclaw Army Post has been a part of the military in Washington for over 100 years. The post was first established on July 1, 1852 as Fort Snelling. On April 8, 1861, the Enumclaw Army Post was renamed Fort Stevens after Maj.-Gen. George A. Stevens who had served as Commanding General of the Department of Indian Affairs during the secession crisis in south Dakota. The post saw service during both World War I and World War II and currently operates as an active duty barracks and storage facility for military equipment and supplies.
Enumclaw is a town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north bank of the Enumclaw River. The name Enumclaw was given to the community by fur trappers in 1869. The name means "place where many rabbits are found." The first post office in Enumclaw was established on July 12, 1870, and was named Biggs after John Biggs, an early settler in the area. The first store opened in 1872 and was called Biggs' Store & Hotel. In 1874, a sawmill and gristmill were built near present-day Interstate 5 and Highway 99W. The town's first school opened in 1876. In 1907, it became part of the newly created Pierce County when it was combined with nearby Olympia to form that county's new central government. Today, Enumclaw continues to be a small town with several businesses and two schools which serve its residents. Enumclaw is a town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bellevue-Everett, WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that now includes Enumclaw was first settled by people from Alaska in 1875. In 1907, the town was established on what is now its eastern border by merging two other small towns: Wenatchee and Auburn. The original name for the merged communities was "Nome". When both towns were annexed by Puget Sound city limits in 1912, they were renamed "Enumclaw". In 1928, when Everett became an official city, Enumclaw's annexation into Everett created a need for a new school district. That same year the Seattle School District took over operation of the old Nome schools and built a new high school at Ninth Avenue and State Street. In 1949, when Tacoma became an official city limits expansion within Puget Sound city limits, Enumclaw also became part of Tacoma's school district; however, until 1974 it continued to be called "Nome" even though it no longer used that name within city limits or with Seattle Public Schools students. In 1975–1976 (the last full decade before City of Everett merger), Nome residents voted to change their name to "Bellevue-Everett" after voting officials recommended doing so because of growing community concern about possible relationships between Bellevue-Everett and Olympia (then still unincorporated). At that time Bellevue-Everett had a population of 442 and Everett had a population of 514; however Enumclaw's population increased rapidly due to immigration from Asia starting in the early 2000s which has continued through today's growth rates (+130% since 2000). This rapid growth has led to some tension between Bellevue-Everett residents and Enumclaw residents as well as some names being changed back and forth between these two communities throughout history including "Bellevue-Nome", "BellevUEverett", "Nome-BellevUEverett", and most recently just "Enumnaclaw".
