Enumclaw is a town in the Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Enumclaw was James Ladd who arrived in 1855. He named his land "Ladd's Land." In 1870, John A. Shively settled on the east side of town and built a log cabin that still stands today. In 1875, George Hutton platted what is now Enumclaw and named it after his brother-in-law, Enoch Porter Jr., who had come to pioneer the area in 1868 from Canada. In 1902, Wm. J. Matson established a small munitions manufacturing business near present day Eastgate Mall in Enumclaw and named it Matson & Sons Ammunition Company Ltd.. The company produced artillery ammunition for World War I and II as well as other products such as cigarettes and cigars. After World War II ended, Matson sold most of his assets to Armour Ammunition Corporation which continued to produce munitions until 1998 when it merged with Remington Arms Company to form American Outdoor Brands Inc.. According to the 2000 US Census there were 2,570 people living in Enumclaw including 1,914 households and 653 families residing within the Town limits; out of which 918 (79%) lived inside Town boundaries while 653 (21%) lived outside of town limits within Butte County or King County; 5% (27) reported they did not live anywhere within town limits but nonetheless considered themselves residents thereof because they either drove into town for work or used public transportation services available within its borders; 3% (15) reported they resided elsewhere entirely within Washington State or outside any country or territory documented by DHS/Bureau of Statistics; thus making up 10%.
