Enumclaw is a small town located in King County, Washington. The population was 2,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area and has a population density of just over one person per square mile. The town is situated on the eastern edge of Enumclaw Lake and surrounds the Enumclaw Reservoir which provides drinking water to about 25,000 people in King County. The first Europeans to visit Enumclaw were traders from Asia who landed there in 1692. A post office was established in 1853, but it closed in 1861. In 1916, the town received a municipal charter and became an unincorporated community within King County. The original name for Enumclaw was "Nisqually". It changed to "Enumclaw" after General George Washington's home farm (now called Mount Vernon) was sold to John Jacob Astor in 1819. The new name reflected both its location on the east side of Nisqually River and its status as a small frontier town with few amenities available to larger communities farther north. In 1911, construction began on what would become the first large school in King County when Ladd Observatory opened at nearby Snoqualmie Pass. In 1925, development began on what would become one of the largest shopping malls ever built when Pacific Highway 16 opened up through Enumclaw into centralKing County In 1957, construction began on Pioneer High School which became one of the most popular schools in western Washington due to its excellent facilities and excellent student body . The town of Enumclaw was founded by pioneers in 1847 on land bought from the Klamath tribe. The first post office was established in 1851, and the first store was built in 1856. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on a branch of the Snake River and its access to timber and water resources. After World War I, Enumclaw developed into a significant agricultural center with a large flour mill and two cotton ginning mills. In 1930, Enumclaw became one of sixteen towns in Yakima County created as part of an effort to improve transportation connections between Yakima County and Seattle metropolitan areas. During World War II, Enumclaw played an important role as an airfield for military aircraft used by the Allies against Japan. The community also experienced growth after the war when new industries began to develop such as engineering and plastics manufacturing. However, during the 1970s and 1980s economic declines led to decreases in population growth throughout Yakima County; however, Enumclaw has continued to experience steady population growth since 2000.
