Enumclaw is a town in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Enumclaw-Centerville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name comes from Native American words meaning "place where the four sacred fires were lit." The first European to visit Enumclaw was Captain George Vancouver in 1792, and he named it Point Defiance because of its location on a point overlooking Puget Sound. In 1851, the town was platted and incorporated as a townsite by Jepson Root, who had swam across Puget Sound to find it and map it out. By 1870, enums (numbers) had been added to most of Washington's counties; Enumclaw was one of only three towns in King County that never had an enums addition! In 1907, John Noyes opened his general store at 3rd Street and WASHINGTON RD., which became known as Noyes' Corner for many years afterwards. In 1916, when Keynesville merged into Wenatchee with other changes in Snohomish County government during the Great Depression, Noyes got back his piece of property along 3rd Street between University Way SW and Federal Way NW (now Kalama Place). He donated this lot to the town for use as an open-air recreation area called Noyes Park - still extant today! In 1984, City Councilor Donny Schuler presented Mayor Gayle McLaughlin with a plaque recognizing her service on city council during more than 30 years thereof - also making her one of just two women ever elected officials to serve continuously on Seattle city council (the other being Jane Erickson). At that time there were no female mayors in Washington! In 1998 John Lewis set up shop down Main Street from his home Depot gas station where he continue serving customers until 2003 when he closed up shop due to health problems related to intravenous drug abuse; prior to that he operated various convenience stores throughout western Washington including Enumclaw! In 2006 Lewises son Jeff took over running business operations at depot until 2011 when facilities closed due mainly Truckers Jacks truck stop about 2 miles away from depot on Highway 99 South near Moses Lake which used to be Lewises main customer base

Enumclaw is a small community in the southcentral portion of Washington state. The name, which means "hook-nosed animal," comes from the abundance of these animals on the local farmlands during the early 1800s. The community was founded in 1872 by James Wickersham and his wife, Anna L. Wickersham, who purchased land east of Enumclaw Lake. The first post office was established in 1874. The district seat for Enumclaw was moved to Chelan in 1907 because of population growth within the district and because of enmity between Enumclaw and Chelan over control of an armory located there. In 1925, District No. 2 encompassed all of southeastern King County and portions of Pierce County; thus, Enumclaw became a part of that newDistrict No. 2 as well. In 1958, according to population estimates provided by the United States Census Bureau, Enumclaw had a population of 914 people; however, by 1970 it had declined to 705 people due to residential development around theLakeview shopping center and other businesses adjacent to it." According to archived census data from 1920 through 1950 (and updated figures from 1960 through 1980), Enumclaw's population ranged from 602 individuals in 1920 to 1123 individuals in 1940." However, according to historian Dick Glickman's book "Washington's Ancient Towns" (1987), "the decline can be largely attributed to two factors: changing patterns of agriculture (industrialization brought more competition for farmland) and migration (the wartime repeal of Prohibition led many Americans westward)." With dwindling resources available for farming and other activities within its boundaries after World War II ended, Enum Claw lost much cultural significance as an agricultural center." Following Glickman's book publication came increased interest in understanding what happened at EnUMcawL following its decline—so much so that efforts have been made both locally and statewide since thento revive its economy." One such effort began with a citizens group formed in 1985 called "The Lakeview Group" whose goal was "to help improve business conditions downtown while preserving our historic buildings"); this group has since grown into an organization with more than 100 members advocating for economic revitalization opportunities withinEnUMcawL." A second effort began earlier this year when a team composedof local developers working togetherwith private investors gathered data about vacant or underused properties within town limitsand createda plan entitled "' area redevelopment feasibility study'". This report offers potential uses for these properties including housing developments, retail/service businesses or even educational facilities; amongst other things it providesAn initial roadmapfor redevelopingEnUMcawL.'"
