The town center is located on the eastern edge of Enumclaw Bay and includes three shopping malls—one inside the Tacoma Mall and two near Interstate 5—and two smaller stores. There are also several small businesses and a few restaurants. The downtown area has a couple of dozen buildings dating back to the early 1900s when Enumclaw was first settled. According to the 2000 census, there were 4,564 people in Enumclaw; 3,811 of them lived in unincorporated areas within King County. Of those residents who reported living in some form of housing other than their own home or rented property, 1% reported being homeless. In 2006-2007, Enumclaw had staff members working for its schools that provided school supplies for residents with no income or unable to afford it themselves.

After years of economic decline and steady population loss through migration to more urban areas, Enumclaw has seen recent resurgence as a bedroom town for rural residents seeking access to high-paying jobs in Seattle. Today, Enumclaw features a variety of retail businesses including two convenience stores (Albertsons and Safeway), four restaurants (including two Thai restaurants), two banks (Aurora Federal Savings Bank and First American Credit Union), three churches (one Lutheran and two Methodist), three library branches (two downtown branch locations and one branch onthe canalbank), five parks - three public and two private - as well as a number of shops and services geared towards rural commuters. The town also contains several historic buildings dating back to before World War II that are open to visitors.
