Enumclaw is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The town was named for two brothers who founded it in 1878 on the site of an old treaty village. Enumclaw grew slowly until World War II when its population exploded because of the military presence there and also because of nearby Boeing plants. Growth slowed again after the war but has resumed since the 2000s as both Enumclaw and neighboring Lakewood have seen increasing development around them. Today, Enumclaw's economy revolves largely around employment in Boeing and other defense-related businesses; however, some local businesses have started to grow into new industries such as agriculture and homebuilding. The community has a rich history that includes both Native American and European settlers; many of whom remain important residents today. The first post office in what is now Enumclaw opened in 1879 and still serves residents today. Enumclaw was one of five towns established within Thurston County by Initiative No. 5 (1927), which became law following passage of the state Constitution on November 3, 1927. At its creation, Thurston County had a total population of 11,353 people; only 706 were living within the boundaries proposed for Enumclaw by initiative petitioners Roy McKinnon and John Hume Vallens (both from Everett). Although no vote was required for incorporation – all towns were incorporated automatically upon passage – enumslawholders voted overwhelmingly to incorporate into Thurston County should their proposed boundaries be approved by majorities among themselves during regular county elections held every three years thereafter (the last election being held on November 3, 1930). After incorporation, growth continued to moderate due to low levels of taxation combined with limited infrastructuredevelopment due to land scarcity; however, this changed withWA Statehood in 1959 which led to increased development opportunities across all classes of citizens including those living within incorporated municipalities while giving these municipalities more power over spending limitations set forth by state government entities like coffers reserved for urban counties only . This change not only led to increased economic development but also spurred political activism By 1970 when voters passed Initiative 6 (An Act To Incorporate The Town Of Enumclaw) initiatives sought greater autonomy from county government within specific limits while maintaining strong ties with rural areas outside city limits “Boeing country” as locals called it began experiencing rapid growth thanks to massive construction projects taking place right next door including an airport built on land leased from Bainbridge Island Naval Station without any input fromEnumslawholders or any elected officials involved until just prior to its closure effective 1990 leaving much unused land along Lake Washington waterfront idle . Enumclaw is a small town in the state of Washington, located on the eastern side of the Yakima River. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Enumclaw was Juan de Fuca in 1792, when he mapped out the area that includes modern-day Enumclaw and what is now Auburn. The town site was chosen because it had an open space and good timber resources. It began as a logging community with sawmills, but declined in importance after World War II as lumber production shifted to more capital-intensive methods such as milling and distilling. In 1955, Congress passed the Magnuson–Moss Act which allowed for American Indians to sell land within their reservations to white settlers. In response, many Indian families moved into towns near Seattle in search of better economic prospects. By 1960, Enumclaw had 2 stores and 18 residents; it grew rapidly until 1970 when a fire destroyed most of the sawmills. After years of struggles to maintain its status as a town, Enumclaw won recognition from Washington State government officials in 2001 for its effort to become an urban center governed by elected officials instead of by county commissioners. In 2006, WSU students founded an organization called "EnUMClaw" (Enumerated Neighborhoods United for claws) which helps promote neighborhood unity and public engagement through events like art walks and block parties
