Enumclaw is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,722 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of King County. The name Enumclaw comes from "enu" meaning "place where trees grow," and "mclaw" or "marker", due to the many small trees that can be found around the town. The first settler in what is now Enumclaw was Abram Stroud in 1853. He named his farm after his brother-in-law, John McLaughlin of Seattle who had given him a deed for land near present day Kenmore Square Shopping Center. The community's first school was built on the current site of Pioneer High School in 1869. Enumclaw has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years and most notably by the Yakima Nation which controlled much of what is now King County during this time period. In 1906, when Congress reduced Yakima Nation's reserve land holdings within Washington state, Enumclaw became part of King County as per an act of Congress known as Indian Allotment Act No 527A. In 1924, Wm Hargrave opened Enumclaw's first gasoline station and convenience store east of downtown; this was followed by other businesses such as a grocery store (1929), department store (1930), post office (1931), movie theater (1951), restaurant (1964) and still stands today as one of the few buildings remaining from those days including its original facade with several large arched windows typical of Territorial era buildings in Seattle During World War II, local residents helped form a military airfield at nearby Anacapa Island which served as both a training ground for bombers and an airstrip used by Navy pilots during World War II . A year later, construction began on Naval Air Station Kenmore which would become home to Boeing Aircraft Corporation’s 767 commercial jetliners . Enumclaw is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The town was founded by fur traders in 1853 and named for George Enumclaw, an amateur naturalist who explored Puget Sound region. The first store opened in 1855 and most of the buildings were built between 1870 and 1880. Fur trading continued until the early 20th century when logging began to take over as the primary economic activity in the area. In 1916, a group of businessmen organized to lease land east of Enumclaw from Washtucket Mining Company, which would later become known as Mount Vernon Mines Incorporated. This group developed what became known as Mount Vernon Township into one of the most heavily populated townships in King County. In 1935, construction began on what is now Interstate 5 within Mount Vernon Township; this led to increased traffic and development around the town center with more stores opening up and homes being built nearby. After World War II ended, many residents left for good because of high taxes and low wages during wartime production jobs (the war had created new opportunities for people). However, some residents decided to stay after finding new opportunities in other parts of King County or because they liked their community's character or location. Today there are still a few hundred inhabitants living within Mount Vernon Township while much of it has been redeveloped into housing developments such as Green Lake Estates and Apple Valley Estates near Interstate 5 Exit 116A/US-5 exit 112B/SR-520 exit 102A/SR-522 exit 117A/. Enumclaw has experienced several name changes throughout its history: In 1853 it was renamed "George Enumclaw" after an amateur naturalist who explored Puget Sound region; this name change occurred due to conflict with another local community that received that name from another fur trader (whose family also owned land south of present day Enumclaw). In 1865 it was renamed "Mount Vernon"; this name change occurred due to objections from settlers living further north on Tacoma Peninsula about having a letter 'V'shaped geographical feature dubbed their own community after British commander general Sir John Moore's home country (although no evidence exists that Moore ever visited these areas).
