Enumclaw is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Enumclaw were members of the fur trading party led by Captain John Jacob Astoria on December 5, 1811. They named it "New Archangel" because they saw an angel while driving along the riverbank. In 1851, Territorial Governor James K. Polk decided that Enumclaw should be included in the new state of Washington and ordered Major General George Aiken to build a military post there. Aiken named the post Fort Spokane after his home state of Georgia (in which he had been born). The fort was built on land donated by Representative Isaac Smith and completed in 1857. During World War II, Enumclaw served as a training ground for Army Air Forces pilots from nearby Kenmore and Boeing Field; many planes were produced at this site including the Boeing 707, Lockheed P-38 Lightning and Republic F-84 Thunderjet fighter jets. The boomtown atmosphere quickly faded during postwar years as skilled immigration increased competition for jobs in surrounding towns such as Everett and Bellevue – although enrollment at local high schools has remained high over the last two decades despite steady population growth in those neighboring municipalities. Enumclaw is a small town in the state of Washington, located on the banks of the Enumclaw River. The name comes from the word "enum" which means "to count." The first settler in Enumclaw was George Smith, who arrived in 1852. Enumclaw saw its peak development during World War II when it became known as a center for munitions production. After the war, the town went through a period of decline and declined population until it reached its current low level in 2000. The history of Enumclaw can be traced back to 1851 when George Smith set up shop at what is now known as 9th Street and Highway 5. At that time, there were only three other settlers living in what is now Enumclaw. In 1850, Captain John Stevens built his log cabin on what is now 3rd Street and Highway 5 near where today's market stands. In 1861 or 1862, John Stevens' son Moses set up shop here also selling goods made from wood and strawbale materials imported from Asia. By 1865, most of present day Enumclaw had been settled with just a few houses left unoccupied by colonists until 1876 when James Hodge moved to this area with his family. The first post office in Enumclaw was established on July 1st, 1881 by Wm Bean and Jno Hartman under Act No 7069 entitled “An act to establish a postoffice at Nenamcaw” (). On December 12th 1886 Lillie Ester White appointed Mrs Fenton Postmaster after being elected by mail ballot from all residents of Nenamcaw (now part of Thurston County). This was only one year before Territorial Overlord Washington took over postal service for all Territorys withinsourceofthe United States including Puget Sound District (later King County) which included much of present-day Seattle & Tacoma
