The Puget Sound Naval Ship Museum in Enumclaw, Washington has a unique history when it comes to naval gifts. The museum was founded in 1907 by Rear Admiral J.H. In 1951, Rear Admiral John Foulke donated four destroyers (USS Voyager (AGS-7), USS Indianapolis (CA-35), USS Nashville (CA-37)), five submarines (SSN 584/SEVENTYeight), three patrol boats(WPBs 1201/1205), and two tugboats(TUG 424/425) to the society as a gift for its sixtieth anniversary celebration which took place on July 8th at destroyer pier #1 in Tacoma; these vessels were used primarily during World War II and also served afterward with distinction in various campaigns including Korea and Vietnam before being sold or scrapped between 1945 and 1973 inclusive; In 1978, Commodore James Paulding donation consisting of six submarines SSN 668/69/770/(USCG nettlediving boat “Alaska”), eight patrol boats WPB 1075/1080/(USCG “Painted Lady”), eleven tugboats TUG 727/728/(SUWCS “Oregon”) made up almost ninety percent of all navy gifts received from merchant vessels between 1978 through 1984 inclusive which totaled 1128 items including nineteen helicopters(HH-60L). Enumclaw is a small town in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Snohomish County, Washington metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Enumclaw were Inuit hunters who came from Baffin Island in 1917 and 1918. They named it Niumaq (meaning "place where two rivers meet"). In 1902, John Davenport decided to settle what is now Enumclaw on land he had bought from the Yakama Nation for $2 per acre ($27 per square mile). He named his new town after one of his sons, Enoch Davenport Sr., because he wanted to show support for his son's future business venture. The name stuck and today's name can be traced back to an early postcard sent by Hyrum Smith in 1907: "Niumaq—A nice place with pretty people." The town developed slowly until World War II when it grew rapidly due to heavy military activity around the local airfields and naval base used during World War II. Enumclaw is a small town in King County, Washington, located on the eastern edge of the state. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The name comes from an Alaskan word meaning "a place where many pinpoints are together." The town began as a post office in 1853 and was platted in 1867. The first settler in Enumclaw was John Brown. He built a log cabin on the east side of what is now State Route 99 near what is now Pacific Highway 165. In 1853, Enumclaw had three residents: John Brown, James Sneath and Solomon Stover. By 1860, there were ten residents: John Brown, James Sneath, Solomon Stover and four others named George Witherspoon (John Witherspoon), Peter Finlayson (Peter Finlayson), Isaac Stevens (Isaac Stevens) and David Jarman (David Jarman). In 1865, the Territorial Legislature authorized development of land within present-day Enumclaw Township by Order No. 5 of that year; this authorization included land for a new post office which would be called "Enumclaw". A lot for the post office was purchased from Hiram Revels on July 1st 1865 by acting Postmaster General Asahel Hitchcock; construction started October 10th 1865 and it opened November 3rd 1865 under direction of Postmaster General Alfred Howe. On December 12th 1870 Samuel Halsey became first resident when he arrived from Tacoma with his family; they had travelled downriver on horseback to make their way to Olympia after being driven out of Tacoma by winter conditions at home on December 11th 1870). On January 8th 1971 Kirtland Wright became the last resident when he arrived from Everett with his family after spending several weeks living among friends in Lynnwood while looking for a place to settle down since he could not find any suitable property in Seattle or Tukwila; they had journeyed upriver over winter months preceding their arrival thereabouts (). Bryan Cramer became manager/operator of the post office on May 17th 1978 following its reestablishment following closure during 1975–76 due to budget cuts ().
