Everett is the county seat of Kitsap County and it also has a student housing complex called Lakewood Place which houses many students from nearby Seattle University. The name "Everett" is thought to be derived from two towns in England: Evesham and Lechlade. The first settlers arrived in 1853 and the second group came in 1855. They named their new town after Captain George Everett who had been killed during an expedition into British Columbia. In 1892, the Central Pacific Railroad built a line through Everett to connect with Salt Lake City; this helped spur development along what is now First Avenue NW. The town became part of Kitsap County on February 3, 1907 and has held its current form since then. In 1959, Everett School District No 2 merged with Central Kitsap School District No 1 to create Kittitas Valley Schools; this merger created one school district that serves all of Kitsap County as well as Thurston County outside of Seattle. In 1992-1993, the city of SeaTac annexed Everett; when that occurred all water lines within Everett were redirected to SeaTac only so that Tacoma could provide better services for its citizens without cutting into local businesses or residential growth. According to the 2000 US Census there were 7,815 people residing in Everett proper (of which 5% were Native Americans) while 6% lived within the boundaries of Kittitas Valley Schools as well as Thurston County outside Seattle (where 4% lived). As Puget Sound shrank in size following World War II and other economic changes began taking hold throughout Northwest America those percentages gradually shrunk until they are now barely above 1%.
