Everett, Washington is a city of over 100,000 people and a sister town to Seattle. The two cities are separated by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which forms the border between them. The Strait has been a source of trade and conflict for centuries, with both sides blaming each other for incidents such as the 1853 Battle of Canquihuala. In 1959, the two cities amalgamated to form Everett-Seattle. The history of military gifts in Everett can be traced back to at least 1861 when Captain John A. Healey donated five cannons and three mortars to the Everett Volunteer Militia Regiment. The guns were used in various militia skirmishes until 1865 when they were sold to the Washington Artillery Regiment under Colonel Edward Hays. The regiment was disbanded in 1867 but the cannons remained with the WAC until 1889 when they were transferred to Company D (1st Infantry) Washburne Volunteers from Tacoma. From 1889 until 1898 they were stationed at Fort Lawton on Puget Sound before being reassigned to Fort Snelling in Minneapolis where they served until 1902 before being moved again - this time permanently - to Fort Snelling where they remain today (the 1st Infantry Regiment Museum also contains some artillery weapons from this period). In 1909, Major General George Armstrong Custer presented Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Prentiss with an American Civil War cannon as a gift. This cannon was later displayed at Quantico Marine Base where it is still exhibited today as part of the museum's collection Of America's Civil War Cannonry exhibit
