The Federal Way area was home to first European settlers in the region in 1792. The area became a part of Washington Territory after the Northwest Territories were created in 1849. In 1861, the United States acquired Oregon and California from Mexico and set up land claims for those states. As a result, much of the Federal Way area was purchased by various United States governments between 1861 and 1881.
