The present day Coast Guard Station Federal Way commenced operations on September 12, 1951.
Federal Way is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the seat of King County. The population was 54,898 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in Washington.[2] It lies on Puget Sound, about halfway between Seattle and Tacoma, and is bordered to the north by Bellevue and Issaquah; to the east by Redmond; to the south by Kent; and to the west by Mount Vernon.[1] The city is home to Microsoft's Redmond campus as well as many other tech companies. Federal Way also contains two shopping malls: One located near downtown and another set within a 5-mile radius of Interbay mall. The Coast Guard's gift history is reflective of its many missions. In 1814, the U.S. Congress passed an act that provided for a corps of coastguardsmen to be stationed along America's coasts in order to protect humanity and property from pirate attacks. The first corps of coastguardsmen was organized on December 15th, 1814 at Portsmouth Harbour, Long Island. This act marked the beginning of a continuous tradition of protecting our coastline which continues today. One of the most significant gifts given by the Coast Guard is their Medal of Honor which was bestowed in 1942 to Captain James Mather for his heroism during World War II. In 1936, Rear Admiral John Pappas presented Commodore Hiram Griggs with a Medal Of Honor for saving 10 lives when Hurricane Mamaroneck struck New York City Harbor. This event also helped solidify Commodore Griggs' reputation as one of America's top sea commanders during World War II. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has received numerous donations from individuals and organizations who have appreciated their work and contributions to society. Some examples include: The USS Constitution Museum (1917), American Red Cross (1941), Ford Motor Company (1946), United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (1982), Rockefeller Foundation (1979), Chrysler Corporation (1959). These donations have helped support many important causes such as education and disaster relief.
The Coast Guard gift history goes back to the very beginning of its existence as a continuously operating service. In 1892, the first Coast Guard cutter, USCGC Shenandoah, was built at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The Coast Guard's first Commanding Officer was Captain John Sowers. In 1915, the USCGC Ossian was built at Norfolk, Virginia and in 1929 the USCGC Nantucket became the first vessel to be equipped with an air defense system. On December 12th 1944 President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9295 which mandated that all vessels of various types belonging to both the United States Merchant Marine Service and Coast Guard must be converted into Auxiliary Cruisers or Patrol Boats carrying either Men-of-war Armed Squadron (MOWS) or Catapulted Projectiles (CPs), with each Auxiliary Cruiser having two MOWS or one CP on board for law enforcement purposes only. This conversion order also required that each Auxiliary Cruiser carry at least four torpedoes for use against submarines and eight machineguns for coastal artillery fire support only when action is taken against submarines by gunfire instead of explosives. On January 1st 1945 these conversions were completed and all six auxiliary cruisers were redesignated as patrol boats carrying MOW's or CP's as well as sixteen guns for coastal artillery support only when action is taken against submarines by gunfire instead of explosives. These patrol boats served until they ceased operations on September 15th 1978 when they were decommissioned due to budget cuts within the Coast Guard itself
The town of Federal Way, located in the unincorporated area of King County, Washington was founded by George Washington and his family on October 15, 1792. The town was named for the U.S. District Court which was then located in Seattle. The first post office opened in Federal Way on November 3, 1856. In 1954, the census reported that there were only 1,814 people living in Federal Way; however, by 2000 the population had grown to over 30,000 residents. The downtown district is home to a variety of businesses and services including a library and post office as well as an airport and several hotels. There are also several parks and trails located within walking or biking distance of the community center and local schools. Federal Way has been host to various international events such as the America's Cup Race from 1922-1925 and 1996-2000 while also playing host to numerous American Football games throughout its history including Super Bowl XLVIII (2012) and Super Bowl LII (2018). In 2018, Federal Way became one of three communities in King County along with SeaTac and Auburn Hills to receive a $115 million dollars investment from Amazon Web Services Inc.(AWS) in order to help improve their infrastructure for future growth opportunities through fiber optic connections, better public transportation options available nearby as well as new Amazon buildings being built adjacent to their existing libraries/post offices/ airports etc……..
The Federal Way area was first settled by the Yakama and Coeur d'Alene Indians in the late 1800s. In 1905, the Washington State Legislature designated a section of the Seattle-Tacoma corridor as Federal Way National Recreation Area, and in 1916, Congress passed the National Park Service Act to create it. The park includes parts of both King County and Puget Sound.
