Federal Way, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 64,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Federal Way's history goes back to 1851 when it was named by President James K. Polk as a site for a military hospital in response to the Wahlquist Expedition which explored the Puget Sound region. In 1882 Federal Way was incorporated as a town and remains so today with a population of over 60,000 people living in over 375 buildings on 9 square miles (23 km2). The city of Federal Way was founded on December 12th 1881 by settler John Dutton and his brother-in-law George Stephenson. They named it after James K Polk who had given them land to build on in recognition of their bravery during the Mexican–American War. The first post office opened in Federal Way on February 22nd, 1882. After years of growth and development, Federal Way became an incorporated town on November 3rd 1902 with a population of around 11600 people; this number would rise to over 16000 by 1910 when Interstate 5was constructed through the area connecting Seattle with Tacoma and other nearby cities. In 1933, federal troops were called into action during World War II following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor and soon afterwards large numbers of residents moved into what is now downtown Federal Way from rural areas east of I-5 including Bellevue, Issaquah and Lynnwood making it one of the most heavily populated areas within King County limits at that time. Many small businesses closed during the war as production shifted to larger plants elsewhere but many remain open today still serving southwestern WA farmers markets until very late at night or all day Sunday! DowntownFederalWay experienced another boom period beginning shortly after World War II ended with an influx of new residents looking for starter homes near shopping attractions such as SeaTac Airport then quickly gentrifying as more substantial housing developed throughout central Redmond until well into the early 2000s despite never being able to attract any major national retailers (and even now some storefronts remain vacant) primarily because they could not find warehouses big enough or space available close enough to enabled efficient shipping/assembly operations!
