The name Federal Way comes from federal land that was donated for development in 1854 by Major General George Custer and his brother Colonel John Custer. The first post office at Federal Way was established in 1855, and it remained in operation until 1901. The first store opened in 1859 and operated for two years before being closed due to a fire. A flour mill started up around 1870 but stopped production shortly afterward due to lack of customers. A sawmill started up around 1875 but also stopped production shortly afterward due to lack of customers as well. After a few more years of operations, both mills were closed down because they were no longer able to compete with cheaper imports from Canada or Europe. In 1889, an act was passed which provided for a township form of government within Seattle County; this township would be known as Federal Way Township (later renamed King County). On July 1, 1907, all incorporated municipalities within King County were merged into one municipality called Seattle withKing County as its governing body; this created Federal Way Township along with Bellevue and Issaquah townships within KING COUNTY while those three townships remained separate from each other until 1959 when they all became part of Seattle proper. On October 17th 1914 there was another act passed which provided for annexation by King county of portions of Bellevue Township including Federal Way; this annexation led to the current name given to most streets in Bellevue - "Federal Way".
