The first Europeans to visit what is now Kennewick were fur traders led by George Vancouver in 1792. They named it "Nisqually" after their then-native friend Nisqually Chief who had been killed by white men on nearby Puget Sound some years earlier. In 1804, when Juan Masañáez became governor of what was then Spanish territory in northwest Washington Territory, he ordered all Indian tribes east of the Cascades be removed from their lands because they were considered allies of Native Americans hostile to Spain's interests. In 1847–48 John Widenour built a ferry crossing from Wenatchee on Lake Wenatchee to Tacoma and soon found himself needing people to work his sawmill which threatened his business stability so he established a company town called Wenatchee Falls with about sixty residents in 1850s before expanding again rapidly through annexation during 1863 when Wenatchee Falls became part of Tacoma. By 1870 there were over one thousand people living in what would become Kennewick including farmers, miners and lumberjacks logging Route 66 between Seattle and Tacoma; this stimulated development near Highway 99 as Warehousing developments sprang up along I-5 corridor parallelling Route 66 while other businesses developed around local elementary schools such as Central High School starting up shortly thereafter catering mostly to farmer commuter markets rather than townsfolk or those outside the commuting radius thanks largely to Interstate 5’s bypassing thereof until well into 21st century times Industrial growth continued throughout 20th century with aircraft production beginning at Boeing Field adjacent Interstate 5 during World War II followed by other light industrial users such as phone companies PacBell Communications Corporation(1951) and RCI Corporation(1959) before becoming extinct following deregulation late in that decade; however much later Chesapeake Energy Corporation started operations near downtown Kennewick employing hundreds prior to its 2014 bankruptcy leading much discussion surrounding environmental issues associated with Marcellus Shale gas fields located less than one mile away from downtownKennewick also homebase for many historically significant roles played by figures associated with both military service related endeavors including General Douglas MacArthur during World War II commanding First Marine Division headquartered at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island while being concurrently Commandant of Marine Corps Reserve Fleet Marine Force Pacific headquarters here during Korean War era commands aspects related thereto not just within active duty branches but also those stationed ashore hereabouts under Admiral Nimitz command staff upon him relinquishing command effective July 1, 1951 only days prior thereto As recently as 2009 more than ninety percent of all rural jobs hereabouts still involved agriculture either growing crops or leasing space for livestock feedlots producing hay products used principally for horsefeed production herein since 1905 especially notable among these activities are large ranches operated by Don Kappas family members having numerous hundred head Angus cattle operation occupying several thousand acres contiguous with urban areas neighboring them dating back over eighty years
