Kennewick, Washington is a small town located in Thurston County, Washington. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. Kennewick was founded in 1847 by Ira Allen and others during the Yakama War. The first permanent settler in Kennewick was Ira Allen, who arrived in 1847 from New York. He built his home on the site of what is now Oregon Avenue and started a sawmill that supplied goods to the surrounding villages. In 1850, he married Anna Maria Shortridge and together they farmed land around their home until 1857 when they moved to what is now Columbia River Road. They raised three children: Alfred (1851-1935), Helen (1854-1945) and Kenneth (1859-1937). In 1861, Anna Maria died after giving birth to her fourth child; Alfred then took over farming with his father until 1865 when he married Lillie French also from Columbia River Road. Lillie had two children: Lawrence (1867-1946) and Rosemary (1870-1960). In 1871, Alfred bought 640 acres of land northeast of Kennewick from Moses Hazen for $4 per acre which he used for grain farming and himself became known as "thefounderofKennewick." He soon developed other interests such as lumber production which led him to sell his interest in 1870 to John Prentice for $50 per acre. By 1876, computer technology had arrived in America so Alfred decided to establish an educational institution named The Institute of Technology at Kennewick where he would teach students how to use the new technology while also developing a business enterprise that would provide employment for locals. The school opened its doors on November 15th 1870 with twenty students including Alfred Fenton who served as acting principal until December 6th 1870 when Professor Harry Sibley became Principal effective January 1st 1971 before leaving again less than one year later due to health reasons Alfred's death occurred on May 2nd 1880 due to pneumonia brought about by using power tools too much although some reports claim it may have been caused by arsenic poisoning from a flower show given by Secretary of Agriculture Jesse Benton.. At age 88 years old he left behind an unfinished building on campus dedicated today as the Alfred Fenton Center For Engineering & Technology in memory of this innovative educator
