In 1907, George Johnstone opened the first general store west of Seattle. In 1913 he also built the first bottling plant west of Seattle (then known as Puget Sound). Today's Robert Hargrave Bottling Plant sits on land that once served as George Johnstone's original business structure. George Johnstone died in 1928 and his son Neil took over running the store with help from his father's employees until his death in 1981. By then it had grown to be one of Washtenaw County's largest retail businesses with over 100 employees and annual sales exceeding $2 million dollars In 1987 the store underwent a major renovation which included installation of new flooring throughout; updating bathrooms; adding state-of-the-art video displays; remodeling of kitchenettes; and addition of an outdoor seating area complete with grill/barbecue grill capabilities for customers dining outside during warmer months It remains one of Washtenaw County’s most popular tourist attractions today with more than 10 000 visitor arrivals annually . The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Kennewick County were fur traders from North America who traveled through the region during the late 18th century. In 1799, James Kelling founded Columbia Mission on his farm near present-day Yakima River. During this time period new settlements were being established all over western Washington due to gold discoveries in what is now Nevada and California; however, none grew quite as large or profitable as Yakima Falls which developed around mile post #4 on US 97 south of today’s Kennewick (the post office was moved from Walla Walla to Yakima in 1907).
