Kennewick is one of ten incorporated towns in King County and is located on the north bank of the Columbia River between Wenatchee and Yakima Counties bordering Oregon to its east and Thurston County to its west. At that time, the area was part of the Russian Colony of Tumwater Bay. In 1858, the Territorial Legislature designated land east of present day Interstate 5 as Kennewick Township. The first school in Kennewick was built on McClure Street in 1859 by teacher William Hanchett (a native of England). Hanchett donated land for a school which he named Mount Vernon School District after his English country home village of Netherland Hall near Utrecht in Holland. In 1870, the name changed to Park River School District when it absorbed portions of nearby Woodinville School District. The first high school in Kennewick opened its doors in 1914 as Central High School with students from both towns attending together until 1963 when Central became an independent school district.
