Kennewick is a town in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-based Soo Lito School District. The historic Amish settlement of Kennewick was established in 1876 and grew to include over 100 families before shrinking in size after World War II. The first settlers were German immigrants who arrived on horseback from Minnesota in 1876. They founded a small community called Red Cloud which included about twenty families and two churches. In 1881, a group of Norwegian emigrants began construction on a log cabin known as Heckscher's Cabin which served as their temporary home until they could build a permanent house nearby. The first post office was established at Heckscher's Cabin on July 3, 1881, with A P Christensen as the first mail carrier. A store and hotel were built along Main Street by 1903, becoming one of the most important businesses in the community during its early years; it would remain open until it closed in 1951 due to budget cuts by then-Mayor John Fenton III.. In 1907, he also initiated an initiative to name all of Wenatchee after local landowners – this idea failed to gain traction among many voters). In 1915, Fenton purchased 125 acres (40 hectares) adjacent to present-day Kennewick for $100 from developer George Hargrave; this land became Kennewick Park . In 1925, when Kennewick Golf Course was dedicated, Mayor Clyde Davenport stated "We must not forget that we are living in America ... We should take pride both hereabouts and throughout our whole country" (); today Gifford Park is one of only two golf courses located within an incorporated city limits in the United States (). The townspeople voted on November 5th, 1930 to change its name from Red Cloud to Kennewick because they felt it conveyed more accurate images that captured what they had been striving for all these years: "a picturesque small town with friendly people". Kennewick is a city in the U.S. state of Washington, and the seat of Thurston County. The population was 11,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Puget Sound metropolitan area. Kennewick is one of two cities in Washington that are both home to universities; Western Washington University and Seattle Pacific University are also located in Kennewick. The first settler in what would become Kennewick was Elisha Denny who homesteaded land on May 10, 1853 along with his family. Denny purchased 640 acres from John Jacob Astor for $4 per acre ($140/acre). He named his property "Denny's Park" after himself and his wife Electa (née Wheeler). The town site was surveyed by John Caulfield on July 8, 1854 and approved by voters on November 7th of that year. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many people working in coal mines near Wenatchee moved to Kennewick as well because coal prices were very high there during those times. Coalmining brought business and retail development to town including a hotel, grocery store, bank, theater, Masonic Lodge #2 & 3 (the first lodge west of Seattle), post office (1898), lumberyard (1901), blacksmith shop (1902) as well as several residences such as Storey House #1-3-5 & 6-8-10 which stand today still standing across from Puyallup Creek Elementary School (& Pizza Hut restaurant). A fire destroyed most of downtown Kennewick on December 12th 1902 due to an overloaded flamethrower used by firefighters fighting a brush fire nearby; this event is considered to be the first known house or building failure in Kennewick history. In 1909 local businessmen organized a trade show at what is now called "The arena" which drew over 1,000 exhibitors from all over western Washington; this event remains one of Kennewick's earliest commercial successes. In 1916 US Representative Hiram Johnson visited Wenatchee while he was campaigning for president; he stopped at Whatcom High School where he announced plans for a new university in Wenatchee called Whitman College which wouldtraining students for jobs outside their homes or technical fields like engineering etc.; however this idea never came about due to financial difficulties caused by World War I interrupted production at Boeing plants throughout Tacoma WA & other parts of America combined with low demand for American trained personnel WWI led to mass layoffs primarily affecting men between 25 - 44 years old throughout most eastern USA when war ended things improved somewhat until 30’s when again unemployment rates topped 50%. This happened even though collegeeducated young Americans had taken up many jobs leading to increased social services needed especially since women were getting married later becoming more breadwinners then ever before thru marriage settlements rather then parental custody arrangements giving rise not onlyto single motherhood but also worker’s cooperatives some 20 years later beginning with unionized steelworkers at Boeing factory during WWII...during these decades Kenwyck residents commonly enjoyed access let alone quality education via public schools open unto all regardless socio economic background yet few if any attended either institution...today much has changed but little has truly changed within our community spirit despite challenges1 Aftermath of World War II: Many businesses closed duringWWII due chiefly to wartime regulations shortageof labor resultantin large lay offs among men ages 25-44yo., grandparents became primary breadwinnersmany small businesses failedduring postwar era following depression....
