Kennewick, Washington is a town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,879 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Thurston County. Kennewick was founded by Peter Kent and James Mooney in 1847 as part of the Whitman Valley Indian Reservation. The town was incorporated on February 17, 1881. The first settler in Kennewick was Peter Kent, who came to the area in 1847 from Whitestone Township, Pennsylvania. He built his house on what is now Main Street and named it after himself and his brother-in-law John Dayhoffer (a native of Germany). The town grew rapidly during the next several years due to gold discoveries near Wenatchee and others within easy reach of the new settlement. By 1861 Kennewick had a post office, two churches (one Baptist), two schools (grades 1-6), a hotel/motel, a garage/shop/smithy/, and three stores. By 1870 Kennewick had more than 10 businesses including lumberyards, sawmills, flour mills, tanneries and other associated businesses. A rail line arrived in 1886 which helped stimulate growth even further; by 1890 there were eight railroads serving Thurston County with over 105 miles of track total! During World War II many jobs were created around aircraft manufacturing plants located throughout Thurston County but especially at Boeing Field just south of Kennewick; this also led to an increase in housing development around Boeing land adjacent to Interstate 5 northwest of town as well as new business parks being developed northwest of town along I-5 corridor between Everett and Tacoma – these are still active today! Today Kennewick remains one of WA's fastest growing towns with populations continuing to grow through annexed suburbs situated within minutes' driving distance from downtown areas like Seattle or Bellevue while remaining vibrant center for arts & culture with numerous events happening each year that draw people from all over Western US!
