The history of the military in Kent, Washington dates back to the early 1800s. The first mention of an army in this area is from 1814, when a detachment from the United States Army was sent to help protect British settlers during the Oregon War. In 1861, during the American Civil War, local units fought on both sides and many soldiers from Kent participated in that conflict. From 1865-1897, the army operated out of Fort George Wright in downtown Kent and conducted various training exercises here. After World War I ended, there were no active military unit stationed in Kent until 1951 when personnel from Camp Pendleton arrived to take over operations at Fort George Wright. In 1957, Fort George Wright was decommissioned and its land sold to become what is today's Courthouse Square. Today, there are several military installations located in or aroundKent including: US Navy Base Kitsap County; Army Garrison Unit Quesnel; Marine Corps Air Station Quantico; and Air Force Station Bentonville-Hawthorne. Each one plays a different role within our Armed Forces and has its own unique culture and history. Kent, Washington is a small town located in the Columbia River Gorge region of the Pacific Northwest. In 1886, Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter presented USS Constitution Museum with a bronze bust depicting American Revolutionary War hero Samuel Adams along with eight cannons that belonged to Commodore Porter's squadron aboard Constitution museum ship duringthe war. In 1907, Rear Admiral Ernest Jelliffe presented USS Baltimore with a set Of pistols designed by George Stephenson which went into use by Baltimore police department during prohibition era (1908). Kent, Washington is a town in Clallam County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Kent was founded by George Vancouver in 1851 as a small village on the Elliott River. In 1870, it became the county seat of Clallam County and remained so until 1959 when Federal City became the new county seat. The first post office in Kent was established in 1853 and closed in 1861. The first store in town was established in 1865 and closed in 1969. The first school opened for students in 1870 and operated until 1957 when it merged with Federal City School District to form Federal City School District #1. The current school district was formed from parts of two previous districts: Federal City School District #2 (founded 1937) and Central Skagit Valley School District (founded 1958). In 1907, a dam was built across the Elliott River which created Lake Kenton. Today's lake is named after George Vancouver who donated land for it and also funded its construction. As early as 1851, there were reports of gold being found near present-dayKent but no significant development took place until after 1860 when federal city became the new county seat due to its location on Elliott River just east of present day Kenton township limits In 1870, following establishment of that new courthouse complex by Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens things got moving with plans for an irrigation canal being hatched with local investors including Jno Brien who would later become President Ulysses S Grant’s Commissioner of Canals This ambitious project never materialized however; disease killed many developers before anything came along to take their places A branch line from what is now Tacoma arrived here via Walla Walla Falls on May 10th 1863 making it possible for goods arriving at Whatcom Junction downriver thence finally reaching PortlandOregon without having to go through Seattle or any other major city
