Kent, Washington is a town in Clark County, Washington, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,812. The name of the town comes from nearby Mount Kent and its summits; Mount Kent was named for Colonel John Kent who fought in the American Revolution. The first permanent settler in what is now Kent was Nicholas Merrill in 1855. In 1861, John Moses established a house on land that would become part of present-day Kent. The first post office was established at Dover in 1866 and moved to present-day Olympia in 1870. The towns of Dutchtown and Auburn were both organized as villages on October 15, 1902 by an act of the state legislature under the leadership of Governor George Prentice Smith. They were merged into one municipality on December 1st following enactment by state legislators of a bill providing for consolidation. That same year, major league baseball player Babe Ruth played his final game at Maple Leaf Gardens before moving to Boston to play with Red Sox teammates Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr. The only professional team ever located within Kent was the Portland Beavers (now called The Diamondbacks) which played their first season in 1903 at Seattle Park before relocating to Tacoma three years later In 1907, when football became an official sport in Washoe County through legislation passed by then-Governor Edmunds Ewing myself we saw that interest grow for local team so I ordered new stadium built which became home field for Our Lady’s High School Mariners starting with their 1st varsity season playing there from 1923 until 1959 A Mayflower ship sank off shore about 4 miles east of our high school site during bad weather enroute from Olympia to Chinle Mexicali Mexico leaving over 300 passengers & crew dead however no damage done to school property fortunately never did any more shipping accidents off shore
