Kent, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 2,191 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The town was founded by Alexander Kent in 1836 and named for him. The first post office was established in 1837. The townsite was platted in 1839 and became a city on December 12, 1889. In 1907, it merged with the neighboring town of Bellevue to form a new city government. In 1959, it annexed the nearby town of Puyallup to become its second city. On November 3, 1999, it adopted an ordinance adopting seceding fromKing County due to increasing taxes and services provided by Bellevue and other cities within King County that did not have similar services or tax rates as Kent. As a result of this ordinance, Kent became an independent city again with its own City Hall and police department although all water & sewer service remains under county control until needed for Kent's own needs which are assured by contracts with both counties through special arrangements made during negotiations

The town's economy changed when logging began to take hold around 1925 and continued until the late 1960s when it was largely replaced by manufacturing jobs. Today, only a few businesses remain in town including the post office and grocery store which are both open 24/7. The history of Kent is significant for two reasons: first, it is one of only two townships in Washington State with a village form (the other being Moses Lake). This type ofvillage arrangement allowed for more communalism among its residents and also helped build community ties that have held up through time.
