Since the beginning of World War II, Marines have been deployed in many different ways around the world. One way that Marines have deployed is through gift history. Gifts given to Marines during wartime are a powerful symbol of appreciation and love. Marine Corps Base Quantico has a history of giving back to its troops with special gifts. In 1969, Maj. Gen. James "Jock" Horne founded the Marine BranchMartian Museum in Kent, Washington as a repository for artifacts from the Mars mission and other space missions by U.S. Marines and their allies throughout history (see article). The museum was dedicated to honoring and displaying the memories of those who served aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65) during her various deployments to Mars between 1969 and 1973 (included were two visits by Menzel/Horne himself). Today, there are more than 350 marine branch museums across the United States and Canada presenting programs on marines and their service in all branches of service (Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy), as well as related topics such as war memorials, naval architecture/engineering projects/roads etcetera; displays on military technology; maritime art; sailors' stories; weapons systems demonstrations; memorabilia auctions; community events including 4th of July fireworks shows etcetera etc., making it one of largest single collectors' clubs in America! The first mention of Kent is from 1855 when it was part of Puget Sound and was spelled "Kenton." In 1861 the name was changed to Kenton after General John A. Kent who fought in the American Civil War and also served as governor of Washington Territory. The town became incorporated on April 15, 1897. The economic development in Kent has been centered around agriculture with a large amount of production coming from cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. There are also small businesses that produce such things as home improvement items or local food service providers. Today's economy relies heavily on public education which offers students opportunities for volunteer work throughout their school years and beyond. Kent is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,931 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Kent was George Vancouver who arrived in 1847 and named it after his uncle, Peter Kent. He also founded the first post office there in 1848. In 1860, John Wesley Powell visited Kent and recommended that its location on the Snake River make it an important site for wagon transportation between Tacoma and Seattle. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century thanks to its natural resources: oil wells were discovered here in 1901, and logging increased along the Snake River as lumber prices rose. By 1910, industry had moved out of Kent and most of its residents had left for other parts of King County or Tacoma altogether. During World War II many people from Kent served in the military including two local high school students who formed a rifle company called "The Old Mill Boys." After 1945 much of what remained of downtown was destroyed by fire; however, due to donations from businesses and individuals postwar development has resumed around Main Street with new housing being built on top of old warehouses/factories along Second Avenue near Interstate 5%. In recent years some growth has occurred around Westlake Park which is home to several restaurants and small businesses as well as a new park service headquarters which opened in 2016 adjacent to Pacific Science Center (former Sea-Tac Airport).
Kent was a small town in Washington Territory, and is now part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first white settler in Kent was David Thompson in 1847. The town developed around the Kent Academy, which opened in 1850. In 1861, Kent became a city when it joined the Washington Territory.
