Kent is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,684 at the 2010 census. Kent is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The townsite of Kent was named after George Kent and his brother-in-law Nicholas Sprague. The first permanent settler in what is now Kent was Captain John Jacob Astor who built his log cabin on the north bank of the Alaskan River in 1811. He named it "Eagle Point" after an eagle that had once nested near his cabin. Captain Astor's wife gave birth to a son in this cabin and he named him George which means "on the banks of the river." In 1815, Nicholas Sprague founded Sprague Bay Colony on land purchased from Captain Astor by his daughter Anna Maria Sprague and her husband Gouverneur Morris. The colony consisted of 20acre (8 ha) lot located east of present day downtown Kent on Mud Lake and extending into what is now Sprague Bay Park. It was organized as a village in 1819 with 10 residents under the guidance of Captains Daniel Ewing (1816-1821), James Purdy (1822-1828), Nicholas Sprague (1829-1837), and Ebenezer Emmons (February 2, 1830 - November 10, 1853). NicholasSprague died in 1799 but his colonists continued to live there until 1830 when they all moved to nearby Issaquah where they established another settlement called New Harbor Colony which lasted until 1840 when it also dissolved due to disagreements about governance between its members. During its early years, Kent enjoyed good trade relationships with neighboring villages including Lynnwood and Everett while trading goods such as lumber, fish, Indian corn pails, flour for saltpeter and other minerals exported to China through Seattle's fledgling Kwame Kilpatrick Commercial District during these years. In 1847 post office operations began at Eagle Point with three clerks serving 37 customers before being relocated to new quarters on Main Street across from today's library building in 1850; this location allowed for much more efficient mail handling than previous locations along Second Avenue south of Market Street during this time period because it offered direct sunlight throughout the day rather than shadows created by buildings along that route which caused delays in receiving mail from distant areas or during bad weather conditions . By 1865, Wenatchee had grown so large that it merged with neighboring towns Kootenai and Stevensville to form the city of Yakima.
