Kent, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 4,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first permanent residents of Kent were those who founded the town in 1847 on land donated by Captain George Vancouver and his wife, Katharine Halliday. The town name may be derived from one or more local hills called "Kent" which are located near the present-day intersection of NE 74th Street and SW Kent Avenue. Originally a small farming community with a population of around 100 people, Kent quickly grew into an important transportation and commercial center due to its location midway betweenSeattle and Tacoma[2] As Puget Sound increased in size and became more navigable,[3] shipping required larger ports on both sides of theSound; as a result, Puget Sound's major cities essentially merged into one when Tacoma became its neighbor to the east in 1909.[4][5][6] By 1920, however, growth had slowed significantly due to development outside of Kent's boundaries: Tacoma had become largely self-sufficient while Seattle continued to grow rapidly thanks in part to World War I munitions production.[7] In 1941, during World War II,[8] Japanese forces burned down much of downtown Kent following their attack on Pearl Harbor

Kent, Washington is a town located in Kitsap County, Washington. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Kent was founded in 1881 by George W. Phelps and named after his brother-in-law, John Copley of Seattle. It served as a military post during World War II and also played an important role in the growth of the Boeing Corporation. In 1992, Kent became a city when it annexed part of neighboring Rainier Valley. Kent was home to several early pioneers who built homes and businesses hereabouts: George Phelps (1821-1902), Reuben Judd (1830-1912), Moses Eaton (1841-1920), and Nelsons Broughton (1850-1920). Two of these men were buried at nearby Belmont Cemetery: Phelps with remains interred there from 1881 to 1902 and Judd with remains interred there from 1912 to 1920. Other early residents include Daniel Webster (1775-1848) and his son De Witt Webster (1787-1859). The first store in what is now Kent opened its doors on September 1, 1881. This establishment was called The Store on Second Street; later that year it moved to Third Street where it continued trading until 1903 when it closed its doors for good because of economic reasons. The first post office in this community was established on October 14th, 1889; it operated under the name Post Office #2 until 1895 when it changed its name to The Store on Third Street due to competition from another business that had opened up at that location - The Mail Boxes on First Avenue - which had been operating since 1885! In 1898, George W. Phelps donated land to make way for a public school district which would eventually encompass all of Kitsap County; this gift ultimately led to the construction of both the present day Kent High School campus via donations by Mr. Phelps as well as adjoining property donated by Mrs. Jane Addams! After many years of hard work by our educators and dedicated citizens alike – including Mayor Norma Jablonski – today’s students enjoy worldclass education within walking distance! The town’s long history reflects not only its rich culture but also some truly amazing moments that took place during America’s pastime! So much so that even those who are not familiar with American history may still be surprised or intrigued by such events as: That same year saw America enter into World War I; however, despite being one small community supporting all manner of military activity – both local & national – none less than President Woodrow Wilson attended their monthly meeting thanks largely to Mrs… Smith who lobbied tirelessly for her husband’s reelection! In 1923–24 bombing raids took place against downtown Tacoma resulting in severe damage though unfortunately no lives were lost? As you can imagine things got pretty hectic back then didn’t they? In 1949 we celebrated our centennial milestone courtesy of Governor Dewey Miller through proclamation designating September 1st “Kent Centennial Day”! We have come a long way since then haven’t we? Although some may argue about certain aspects such as our lack thereof an Arts & Entertainment District has actually been created specifically for arts lovers withinClose proximity(!)?! Kent, Washington was founded in 1847 by George A. Smith and named for the county in which it was located. The town of Kent was platted in 1854 and became a steamboat town on the Columbia River. The town's first post office opened in 1861. In 1893, the railroads came through the area and developed transportation within the community, which led to its name change to Portland. In 1912, when Oregon became a state, Kent became part of Multnomah County and continued to use its original name until 1959 when it changed back to Kent.
