The United States National Guard is a component of the U.S. military and is responsible for providing operational security, training, and support to DoD missions. The Guard was created in 1790 as an arm of the Militia through the Second Continental Congress. In 1861, when the Confederate States of America seceded from the United States, the Military Department of Maine (Maine militia) became part of the newly formed National Defense Association (NDA) and organized as a regiment within NDA on July 1, 1861. On November 15th 1862 at Lewiston barracks in Olympia, Washington Captain John Babbitt organized a detachment from Company A 2nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment to provide local defense against possible Indian attack following US forces' entry into Seattle during The Great Puget Sound War (1862-1865). This event is celebrated annually by members of both state militias as Patriot Day in Kent County, Washington. In 1868 Colonel Augustus Mifflin organized Company D 3rd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry Regiment which was mustered into service for three years with no paid leave; this event is also celebrated annually by members of both state militias as Veteran's Day in Rhode Island County. During World War II over 4 million men and women served in our Armed Forces earning medals and citations such as Victory Medals or Overseas Service Medals (OSMs). Many were decorated with Presidential Unit Citations which are unique acknowledgments bestowed upon those who have rendered distinguished service while serving our country abroad or while performing patriotic domestic duties ashore or afloat. The first recipients were honored on December 5th 1944 with Presidential Unit Citation “For conspicuous Gallantry above and beyond that required” as captain/major James J. Hillman commanding company C 29th infantryregimentNR during action at Iwo Jima where he personally executed orders sustaining heavy casualties despite extreme weather conditions

Kent is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,500 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County. The first European to visit Kent was Captain George Vancouver on his HMS Discovery in 1792. He noted that the "Island" he had named Puget Sound was located on what is now Kent's Main Street. In 1851, John Denton founded the community of Centralia and proclaimed it the new county seat of King County. In 1861, when Washington became a state, Centralia reverted back to its original name of Kent and all other towns within King County were re-classified as part of Pierce County. However, Centralia continued to exist as an independent town until it merged with Kent in 1907 to form what is now called Fremont Township. In 1868, gold was discovered at Gold Hill and this led to increased development around the gold fields in central King County. By 1872 both Centralia and Kent had over 7200 residents while only Fremont Township had under 2000 residents. The influx of workers caused much congestion along Highway 97 which created many problems for early settlers such as not being able to build homes on high ground or access education or health care services available elsewhere in the area; these issues continue up through present day. In 1905 there were still only 4500 residents living within centralKingCounty while 10 towns larger than Kent incorporated into PierceCounty; however by 1920s there were more than 25000 people living within centralKingcounty alone while only 3 small towns remained outside PikeCounty altogether
