Kent, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first settlers in Kent were white men from British Columbia who arrived on July 4, 1859. They named their land "Kent" after their home town of Canterbury in England. The town was founded on April 14, 1861 by John A. Hutton and his brothers-in-law George Wirtz and Jesse Prentice. In 1882, the Union Pacific Railroad built a line through the center of Kent and connected it to Tacoma.
