The first white settlers in Kent, Washington were the Deerskinners, who arrived in 1851. The area was originally land that was owned by the Yakama Nation. This tribe had resided in the area for many years before being forced out by European colonists in 1847. The early settlers began to arrive from northwestern British Columbia andOregon, and initially used the local woods as their primary means of transportation. By 1857, there were only a few families living in what is now Kent when gold was discovered near Gold Hill on July 24 of that year. The discovery led to a rush of people into the northwest corner of Washington Territory, which included much of what is now Kent County. On October 15, 1857, an act was passed by Congress recognizing both the new land east of Wenatchee Creek as part of Washington Territory and giving rise to the name “Kent” for this section of the territory. In 1862, a post office was established at Kent with Wm E Benson as its first postmaster. The town became an important center for trade with those located near Wenatchee Creek because it had access to good water supplies andee resources including timber and coal. In 1865-1866, construction began on what is now Interstate 5 through central Kent and most notably affecting Road 224 which bisects present day downtown along its route - one of America's earliest freeway projects! After World War II ended in 1945, development continued throughout the postwar period with heavy emphasis on agriculture until 1950 when manufacturing became more significant once again within Kent limits; however major industry has since moved away from Kent due largely to suburbanization elsewhere inWashington Territory following World War II changes thereto
