Kirkland, Washington is a small town in the state of Washington. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-Tacoma metropolitan area. The University of Washington campus is located in Kirkland and the nearby SeaTac Airport provides transportation to many areas in Puget Sound. The name "Kirkland" was given to the community by Captain John Kirk who settled there in 1847 as a component of what would become Tacoma. In 1881, when Tacoma became an incorporated city, it merged with Kirkland and other villages in what is now King County. According to one source, "the suffix -land" originated because most of those living there were farmers who sold their land holdings for cash advances on credit." A year later, Channing built the first schoolhouse in what is now Kirkland; it was dedicated by Governor Hiram Sibley on November 30, 1909. By 1925, there were 12 schools serving Kirkmansett Township: 6 public schools (Channing Elementary School through High School), 2 private schools (Eastside Christian School and White Sands School), 1 rural school (Thornapple Hill School), 1 home economics school (Lakeshore Home Economics Institute), 2 special needs programs (one for deaf children at Meadow View Country Day Care center and one for handicapped children at Prairie View A&M United Methodist Church). During World War II, Kirtlan Air Force Base operated out of Terminal 3 on Montezuma Road adjacent to Columbia Heights Elementary School until 1945 when it relocated outside the city limits of Spokane due to air defense concerns caused by Japanese bombers flying over Seattle during that time period. Terminal 3 served as an important storage facility until 1958 when all non-essential military facilities were consolidated under Spokane's jurisdiction within Park District boundaries which included terminal buildings used by both agencies until 1996 when demolished along with much of Terminal 3 Estate due to fire damage only 8 months after its original dedication following closure) . Kirkland is a town in King County, Washington. The population was 10,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Kirkland were the Nisqually people who seasonalized their land around Puget Sound for trade with the Chinook and other tribes. In 1851, James Chehalis established what is now Chehalis Landing on the northern shore of Lake Washington and homesteaded his land there. He named it after his father’s birthplace in Kirkland, Scotland. The first post office was founded in 1852, and by 1870 it had become an incorporated village. In 1861, John Davenport platted what is now Pioneer Square on the east side of Elliott Bay and nominated it for incorporation as a town. However, due to lack of support from local residents, Pioneer Square never became an incorporated town. In 1872, James Kapp organized a group of farmers to buy 1/2 acre (0·86 km²) of land north-west of present-day Kirkland center from Chas Sutherlin for $100 per acre (3·43 km²). This site would become home to Kapp’s Millinery Company which operated until 1907 when it was sold to Macy’s Department Store chain. The millinery company produced lace curtains and other fabric goods for retail stores throughout downtown Seattle until its closure in 1957; then it moved into storage until development renovated the property in 2004 as Kirkland Center mall. It should be noted that while some evidence exists that early Native Americans may have huntedBig Game animals within today's boundaries of current day Kirkland - nothing has been concretely proven - this does not mean that they did so specifically or continuously throughout much or any portion of their history hereabouts! There are numerous archaeological sites nearby which date back over 3200 years old! While no definitive proof exists one way or another suggests such activity took place within our borders... nonetheless legend has it...
On July 7, 1853, the first permanent settlement in what is now Kirkland County was established when a group of men and women led by Capt. James Wallis erected a log cabin on the west side of Bear Creek. The town name was chosen to honor U.S. Senator George A. Smith (D-Wash.) who had helped establish the county and select its location. The town grew quickly and by 1875 it had a population of 200 people. By 1907, the population had increased to 2,500 people and by 1930 it had reached 5,000 residents. In 1951, the community consolidated with nearby Bellevue to form one large city with an estimated population of over 10,000 people today.
