The history of artisan coffee in Kirkland, Washington started with Harry Pease in the 1940s. He was a small-time grocery store owner who started selling small amounts of roasted coffee beans from his home. In the 1950s, he opened the first café in Kirkland, which is now known as The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. In the early 1960s, he began importing Italian roasted coffee beans to add to his repertoire. He continued to operate The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf until 1984 when he sold it to Dick's Coffee Company. From then on, Dick's Coffee Company operated The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf under various names until it was purchased by Starbucks in 1999. Starbucks continues to operate The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf as a separate business today.
Kirkland, Washington is a town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,554 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest community in Thurston County after Seattle and Olympia. Kirkland is located on the east bank of Lake Union and its downtown district occupies most of the west bank. The first permanent settlement in what is now Kirkland was made by brothers John Day and Peter Halliday on November 11, 1853 when they founded the village of Springdale on land that still stands today. The original name for Kirkland was Eastern Oregon Territory (now Yakima), but it was changed to honor General George Armstrong Custer who died in 1876 during his Indian Wars expedition through this area. On December 5, 1886, William Fenton bought 640 acres (248 hectares) south of present day Kirkland from Indians for $1 million dollars. This provided much needed farmland for settlers as well as an important location due to its strategic location between Puget Sound and Seattle giving easy access to both ports. On October 6, 1889, Pacific Electric Railway reached here with their new line extending north from Tacoma to Everett via Silver Lake Junction just south of present day Kirkland. In 1896–97 a large dam was built across Cedar River just east of town and became known as Crystal Dam which helped power much of northern Tacoma and parts of Olympia while also providing irrigation water for many farms in central Pierce County.. The railroad closed down completely in 1949 but left a big impact on the economy as thousands more people came into town looking for work during those years.. Today there are several small businesses along Amtrak's Central Corridor linking downtown with suburban areas north andsouth of town including Bellevue (northwest), Issaquah (west), Lynnwood (southwest), SeaTac Airport (southwest) and Redmond (northwest). According to the 2010 census,[3] there were 7,554 people living in Kirkland with 4% African American residents[4] making it one of few townships or villages wholly majority white throughout its history

This decline in popularity led to several smaller operators shutting down or being bought out by larger companies. As a result, many of today’s best-known artisan coffee brands are actually based on older legacy operations! Overall, it is clear that there is much history and connection between artisan coffee manufacturers and consumers alike. The products we enjoy today owe much debt to those who started things back in the past – whether it be through small-time brewers or even more famous giants like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts!

Kirkland, Washington was founded in 1851 as a small community on the banks of the Columbia River. The town quickly grew and by 1870 had reached its peak with a population of 1,500 people. However, within two decades Kirkland had fallen victim to economic collapse and ceased to exist as a municipality. Today, the area retains a strong sense of community and culture which can be seen in the many local businesses and restaurants that still operate. Kirkland is home to several important historical sites including the Kirkland Armory where America's first rifle was manufactured, and Fort Snelling which served as an early military post in what is now Minnesota. Additionally, Kirkland has some impressive architecture including the Kirkland Courthouse which was built in 1868 and still stands today.
The Kirkland area was first populated by the Lummi tribe in the late 18th century. The first white settler in the area was Captain John Turnbull, who arrived in 1792 and built a cabin on an east-west road that later became called Turnbull's Way. In 1837, Angus McDougall established a post office at what is now the intersection of 124th Street and Washington Boulevard. The town of Kirkland was platted in 1854 and named for Captain James Kirkland, one of the early settlers. The first store opened in 1865, and the population reached 1,600 by 1870. A school was built in 1872 and renamed for Mrs. Jane Addams; it operated until 1975. Kirkland grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the Civil War, becoming one of Seattle’s most important neighborhoods. During this time, many businesses were founded including K&L Mart (now Macy’s), First National Bank (now Wells Fargo), Pacific Gas & Electric Company (now Northwest Energy), and Sound Transit Systems Incorporated (later Sound Transit). In 1967, when King County was created from part of Seattle County, Kirkland became its seat. In recent years, development has slowed down in Kirkland as demand for housing has increased in neighboring areas such as Bellevue and Redmond. However, there are still several active businesses located within walking distance of most residents' homes
