Kirkland, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the land grant of 38 acres (16 hectares) to George Kirkland in 1855. The town began as a small farming community and grew rapidly during the early days of World War I when it became an important staging ground for military operations in the region. It reached its peak growth during World War II with a population of 10,000 people. However, after the war Kirkland experienced rapid decline due to declining agriculturalactivity and changes in demographics within King County. Today, Kirkland remains an important local center but its economic fortunes have changed little since 2000. The first settler in what would become Kirkland was George Kirkland who received his land grant on December 7, 1855 from Chief Seattle. At first there were only nine settlers living on this tract of land which totaled just over 38 acres (16 hectares). By 1860 most of the original residents had left for other reasons or had been replaced by newcomers such as lumbermen and farmers who took up their places. In 1865 Alfred Weems arrived with his family and started plowing up the new fields that he had purchased from George Kirkland two years earlier. Unfortunately for Weems things didn't go well; his plowshare turned into muck when going over logs so he went back home to get another one and failed to notice that his field was now blocked by a large tree trunk which he had not seen before! In 1868 John Aitchison moved into what is now known as Weems' Landing along with his wife Catherine Aitchison and their four children Alice, Johnathan Balthazar Aitchison Jr., Jameson Reynolds Aitchison III and Sarah Jane Aitchesison became permanent residents of present day Kirkland after purchasing 81/2 acres (30 hectares) stretching eastward fromold Weems Landing across Thompson Creek towards modern day Pullman closer to Spokane Valley than they ever did before! This area would eventually become known as Northshore Developmental Center because much development occurred here adjacent to Northshore Lake including several stores / motels / restaurants still open today despite being built next door (and across street) when Interstate 5 was first built! Aircushioning continued until 1870 when Jameson Reynolds came along with some friends from Prince Rupert . After some discussions about where they should locate their town site they decided on what is now north side of Main Street between Empire Way and Nebraska Avenue although President Ulysses S Grant referendum rejected any proposal for a city limits boundary because “the whole Township [of ] Kirtlan” belonged “to Spokane county alone” (!), probably meaning that all or part of Kirillan should remain within Spokane County? Although no record has been found documenting this decision it's generally assumed that Jameson Reynolds intended to establish Kirillan east of State Street rather than north side thereof because this location seemed more promising given nearby agricultural lands available on both sides of State Street while also providing easy access to Highway 99W & Highway 2B making Kirillan practical transportation hub especially during times when regional commerce could only be accessed by boat or train? Although little evidence exists supporting this assumption there are many references which suggest otherwise so whatever happened may have been actually meant! Anyway...Jameson Reynolds founded Kirillan on November 16th 1870 consisting primarily of himself & 4 others living near current day Columbia Heights Shopping Center ! From here almost everyone who came through town prospered including: Jno Reynolds Brewery founded 1902; Everett Glass Company 1918; Pacific Telephone 1912-1918 (& later Westinghouse Phones); Seattle Lumber Co 1922-1928(& later Douglas Fir Timber Co.) Hired Hands Furniture 1915-1920(owned by Jno Coyle 1924-1927); Wm Fenton Coal Mines 1911-1920
