Kirkland, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 535 at the 2010 census. It became a city on February 15, 1907. At the time of its incorporation it was the smallest town in King County by population and had a total area of 2 square miles (5 km2). The history of Kirkland goes back to 1855 when two brothers founded the town of Kirkland on an tract of land that they purchased from Captain George Vancouver. The first store and post office opened in 1857. In 1861, John Averill built a sawmill and gristmill within the limits of the new city. In 1872, entrepreneur James Higgs established Kirkland's first bank which still operate today as First National Bank. By 1886, there were 10 businesses operating in Kirkland with over $6 million in assets! By 1893, there were 20 businesses operating with $40 million in assets! In 1906, after years of planning and hard work by Mayor Smedley Butler, Kirkland became its own municipality under state law #27-404. On February 15th 1907 people from all over King County gathered to celebrate when City Hall was dedicated located at what is now First Avenue South & Main Street! With an overall population totaling 535 residents as of 2010 census – including 435 households – Kirkmans placed second only to Seattle for population density among American cities with over 100000 inhabitants! Kirkmans are proud to maintain their small town feel while living inside one of North America’s most populous cities!
