They were married twice – once in 1861 (in a wedding officiated by Reverend George Morrison) and again in 1865 (in a ceremony presided over by Bishop James Wintney). Kirkland quickly became an important stop on horseback transportation between Seattle and Olympia during the early 19th century due to its ample supplies of water buffalo for meatpacking purposes as well as its location downstream from ferries running between Puget Soundand Lake Union Bridge across Elliott Bay. By 1875, there were five stores, two hotels, three churches – all operated by local entrepreneurs or proprietors such as Mr. Henson – along with several hundred residents living within blocks surrounding Main Street which extended down both sides of present-day 4th Avenue NW until it reached Edmonds Road SW today’s campus boundaries with Bellevue Cemetery before terminating at Yesler Way NE today’s University District boundary line separating Ballard from Redmond neighborhoods northeast of Interstate 5A In 1925, when Kirkland became an incorporated city under state law following rampant growth throughout King County despite bans put into place by then-Governor Hiram Johnson due to concerns about traffic congestion caused by increasing numbers of automobiles being ownership only white men (the first municipal incorporation laws were passed statewide), Mayor Harry Ahern proclaimed “George Washington Day” on October 12th in honor of that year’s new president On Friday morning November 3rd 1907 while most other businesses closed up shop due to Thanksgiving Day festivities around Puget Sound including much shopping done at Safeway store(now known as Walmart)& other nearby stores [Edmonds Rd] it was open late at Safeway where Mrs Maurer[Edmonds Rd] ran our grocery establishement open late making Thanksgiving dinner for many families & also serving refreshments thru out town after church services
The first white people in the area were fur traders who came from Russia in 1804. The first permanent residents were the McKay family, who arrived in 1825. In 1846, the town of Kirkland was platted and named for Captain James Kirk, an American Revolutionary War hero. The town had a population of about 100 people when it became a city in 1907.
