Kirkland, Washington History begins with the first people to reside in the area now known as Kirkland. The first European to visit this area was Juan de Fuca, who explored and charted the Strait of Juan de Fuca in 1592. In 1792, James Alexander Thurston founded what is now Thurston County on land that he claimed for British Columbia. He named it after himself, James Alexander Thurston (1768-1845). The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1827 when George Aspinall and his family moved from Ontario. They began farming a piece of land they called Aspinall’s Landing on Puget Sound. By 1830, they had built a cabin and started trading with the natives. In 1831, they married Anna Maria Snively and set out for what is now Olympia. They arrived at Sitka Bay on Kodiak Island, where they established their farmstead. This place was also known as Yakutat Bay because of its abundance of seals and sea otters. The Aspinsalls were the first Europeans to build a school in America! In 1839-40, Rev John Atherton taught English at an American mission station at Sitka before coming to Kirkland in 1840 to open a Methodist Mission there. From 1840 until his death in 1865–66, Rev Atherton directed services at Anacapa Rectory which still stands today as one of America’s most important religious institutions for women convicts during that time period In 1861-62 Capt John Wills established a ferry service between Sitka Bay and Kodiak Island using his boats “Cordova” and “Halcyon” which he named after Captain Cook’s ships HMS Beagle (1801) and HMS Dolphin (1805), both located nearby offshore at Kupolda Point on Kodiak Island In 1863 Lt David Goodyear landed an expedition led by Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Lynch aboard USS Discovery (1863) near Cape Flattery on Kodiak Island looking for North Slope oil fields but abandoned due to lack of success when no oil was found In 1865 Rev Atherton opened St Paul Presbyterian Church which remained operational until 1978 The town of Kirkland was platted by Jeptha Sargeant around 1889 when he donated two acres west of present day Highway 2 near Present Day Pioneer Square . Most likely due to Sargeant being interested in developing land east of I-5 along Lake Washington Avenue south from Queen Anne Hill into downtown Kirkland - development never took hold however portions or all of Sargeant's donation remain within present day Kirkland limits today

The first post office opened in Kirkland on November 1, 1857. Since then, there have been more than 50 businesses that have operated within the town limits.
